Dear Co-Laborers,
We continue to be greatly encouraged by the youth outreach of the church here in Tournefeuille. It is truly the church youth reaching out to bring their friends. Each month we have a meeting that includes games, eating and most importantly, Bible study. This year we are going through the Bible looking at the major miraculous events. So far, we have read and discussed the Biblical narrative of Creation, the worldwide Flood, and Israel’s Exodus from Egypt.
I am including pictures of the most recent youth meeting the night before last. We had 16 young people here on Saturday night. The meeting is for Junior High and High School ages. Thomas, a H.S. Senior from our church brought two of his High School friends. One of them had never been to a religious or church event before. Yesterday, in church, Thomas testified that this friend who was here for the first time felt well received and quite interested. He wants to return and is interested in discussing spiritual matters. We are thrilled by initiative of the young members of our church to bring their friends.
We and others in our church pray for acquaintances and family members and in the last couple of weeks we have seen God answer a number of these requests. We continue to be encouraged by the spiritual growth of our members, adult and youth.
The yellow vest street protests have continued for several months now. These have gone on much longer than we expected. It is to a great degree a headless show of discontentment about many different things. It is certainly a manifestation of the reality that in all of our countries people are looking for answers and fulfillment in the wrong places. As believers we need to keep our eyes on Christ and remember that first and foremost we are members of His family and Kingdom.
The regular Bible studies and prayer meetings in homes are going well. Thank you for your continued participation in the ministry here. Please, continue to pray for God to stir up a hunger for spiritual things in those who live around us and give us the wisdom to display and communicate Christ.

The Gospel Going forth in Brazil, Paraguay, & Colombia!

Starting the second week of January we held our first Missions Training Seminar and we were thrilled to have two middle-aged couples among our 20 volunteers! Two married couples who are just shy of retirement have been praying for the Lord’s direction in their life after they leave their secular jobs. After seeing how God used them to touch so many lives in Brazil and Paraguay in just a few short weeks, they feel strongly led to transition from their present jobs to full-time evangelism. We are praying with them and for them to clearly know God’s will about this so important decision. If they are truly led of the Lord to come be a part of our ministry outreach, they will certainly be a welcomed addition. I admire their way of thinking at this stage in their lives. So many middle-aged Christians start thinking about leisure and comfort and here these dear folks are seeking how they may more fully serve the Lord with their available time and resources. May God truly guide them in this process.

Another man who trusted Christ in Paraguay
Our team who took the gospel message to Paraguay came back rejoicing at how open most of the people were to the gospel. But it became evident that the adversary has his grip on people of all nations. One young man from our team was visiting in a neighborhood and began a conversation with man who became upset and hostile. Despite the man’s rudeness and hostility, our evangelist retained his pleasant attitude and treated the man with respect. He invited the man to come to our evangelistic presentation that would be held in the public square that evening, but the man told him to leave. In parting, the young evangelist felt led to ask the man to take his son, who was standing by his side, to the presentation. That night, lo and behold, the man showed up with his son to the evening meeting! He stayed throughout the entire service of gospel skits, testimonies and preaching and when an invitation was given at the end of the meeting to surrender his life to Christ, the man went immediately to the front of the crowd to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. This turn of events further strengthened our worker’s faith in the power of God to transform lives through the gospel.
While one group was in Paraguay spreading the gospel two of our workers got the opportunity to go on mission to Colombia. Israel and Giovane are both musicians and received an invitation to teach the people how to play wind instruments, which is their strength. Teaching the people to play the instruments was their platform for sharing the gospel with their students. They were assisting a missionary who is attempting to plant a new church there. As they taught how to play the instruments they also shared how God had changed their lives through trusting in Jesus Christ and how their lives could be transformed as well. They both were used of the Lord to win several Colombians to Christ during their three-week stay there. The local missionary is now working to disciple those who surrendered to the Lord.
Next week Charlene and I will resume teaching our English classes along with our volunteer tutors from our church teaching their respective subjects. It looks like we will have quite a few returning students as well as several new ones. We are excited about the privilege sharing the gospel with folks who wouldn’t ordinarily come to church for any other purpose. Please keep us in your prayers throughout this next semester.

Dear Brethren,
Time flies when you are having fun or when you have too much work to do and deadlines looming. Forgive me for not reporting to you lately. Our work is in a major transition right now. There is enough to report, but it seems so boring to me that I have just been lazy about telling you.
Our Christmas musical was a success and several people were saved. Now that the crime wave has subsided somewhat the crowds actually came back up. On Christmas night we had a big rain and that kept the crowd just at maximum capacity. We actually thanked the Lord for that rain as otherwise we would have had to turn away hundreds of people.
We held our first baptism service of the year and 13 new members were added. We have had people saved every week so far this year. One Sunday night I preached about the Sabbath and did not give an invitation, although I did preach the gospel. There were still 3 public professions of faith! We have had some more saved during our Wednesday night doctrinal services, too.
We sent out another missionary couple this month and approved another. Anísio and Matilde are already at Gama, Amazonas (neighbor state, east of Cruzeiro do Sul). We also approved Lucas and Diana. They have just finished seminary. For the next 6 months they will be here under our wing doing an internship that all of our missionaries are required to do. In the middle of the year we will be taking them to Santa Rosa do Purús. This town has no Baptist church and is on the Purús River on the Peruvian border. They are also expecting their first child in March. Yesterday the ladies at church gave Diana a baby shower.
Their church building was designed and built 40 years ago by Bro. Mike.
Demolition has started on the old church building in order to rebuild and double their seating capacity.
Two weeks ago I began tearing down our old church building. I designed and built it 40 years ago. We outgrew it a long time ago and have made modifications to add more space. I added a mezzanine for an extra 220 people. A couple of years later I tore out 6 Sunday School rooms to add another 240 seats. We moved those rooms into our 3 floor annex. Over a year ago we built a metal structure over the top of the old building. Now I have gutted the old building and tomorrow I start rebuilding. Of course many of our members are working with me every day and into the night. Some can only come during their lunch break or at night and there is a lot of different crews almost every day. It is a strange sensation tearing down what I built personally, hands on, 4 decades ago. I have no sentimental or regretful feeling. It is just strange as each brick, bolt or nail comes down. As I work I think, “I put this bolt in this truss 40 years ago, now I am taking it out.” Just sharing the feelings that go along with this new phase.
The third floor of our annex is a covered but all open. That is where we are having services now. The area is over 5800 square feet. The crowds have been really good in spite of the lack of AC and 2 flights of stairs. We want to have the new building up by May 12th when the church celebrates her 90th birthday. We don’t have any debt and we only have $3,000.00 in the bank. We do have a crazy pastor. What matters though is that we have a very rich and loving Father. The new building will double our seating capacity.
For some time I have been working 12 and 13 hour days of manual labor. Leave at dawn and get back home after dark. Then I have church work at least 4 nights a week, besides trying to make time for counseling and other jobs related to our ministry. You get the idea. The church needs your prayers and I need your prayers.

Dear praying friends,
We are now in the month of February, and there are many things to update you on. We ask that you would please pray for us in the areas provided, as there are some things we need prayer for currently. Thanks so much to each of you for your heart for missions. We truly do appreciate you.
One prayer request we have currently is for the health of our family. There is work being done to tarmac one of the main roads in Milimani, where we reside. This is actually a very good thing and will bring many improvements, such as removing the potholes from the roads, reducing the amount of dust in the air, providing smooth transport for those in Milimani, etc. It is always challenging to drive in rainy season, as the roads are mainly hard forms of mud and when it rains, the vehicles go over the road, creating big ruts and potholes. Now, with the tarmac (hopefully to be completed by March this year), this will be greatly reduced. However, a big problem is the amount of dust created from digging up the road and smoothing it. McKenna and I both struggle with asthma and this dust is making it worse. McKenna has had to miss some school days, so we would appreciate your prayers not only for us, but for all those within the Milimani area. Please pray that they would conclude the tarmac project on time, as this will be a great help.
Please also pray for the new school wing that my wife and daughters are involved with. There have been some bumps along the way, as is expected, so please pray for the beginning of the school, for the teachers, the parents, the students, and the directors. Please pray that God would be glorified and all would be done for His glory. Please also pray for our daughters and the friendships that they are currently making. God is in control and we trust Him for all these things. I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 10:31, which says “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
I (Nathan) have been discipling a younger Kenyan, Emmanuel, in Milimani. He has done very well so far through the course and is volunteering to lead once a month in a home group Bible study. I think there are around 14 families attending this study, so this is a big step for him and a great way to reach multiple families. Emmanuel has given very positive feedback to the course so far, so please pray for him as he now plans to start teaching others. This is the model I wish to pursue currently, to train, disciple qualified Kenyan men who God will raise up, who in turn will go to teach others. This reminds me of the model given in 2 Timothy 2:2, which says “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” One of the key phrases in this verse is “faithful men.” I would covet your prayers for God to raise up “faithful men” who will go and teach others.
Something that has been emphasized to me (Nathan) while training is to work with employed young men, ages 20-30. Why? I have been told from several people that have lived here for years that youths don’t have the same level of expectations to receive material items from the missionary. This doesn’t mean that there are not some expectations, but hopefully they will be reduced by working with youths. Hopefully this will help with the dependency issue some. Also, to work with those that have jobs. Why? Because those with jobs already have taken the initiative to provide for their families and have a strong work ethic. This also should help some with the dependency issue. So, please, please pray for God to raise up employed young men to train. I would greatly appreciate prayers about this. I am willing to be patient and wait on the Lord to provide these kind of men. God will provide in His time.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It has been a long, hard month and I cannot remember being this tired for this prolonged of a period. We have worked really hard this month and it has left me feeling ragged and worn out. But that is not to say that the work hasn’t been rewarding, nor has it been drudgery. But it has been exhausting. I don’t know, maybe I’m just getting older and my mind and body just can handle what it used to be able to handle. I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m complaining, because I’m not. I’m just telling you all where I’m at right now.
Work at the Upper Room Baptist Chapel has been going well. Our attendance for the month has kind of been all over the place but our “regulars” have continued to come each and every week. On one of the Sundays this month we did experience our highest attendance to date with 28 people! While I’m not getting caught up in any numbers games, I did think this was a great attendance and I was very excited that so many people heard the Biblical message that week. Of course, the next week our attendance was about half that amount. I was telling a local pastor friend of mine about our fluctuating attendance and he gave me this perspective. He said, “Roger, you are the only full-time member of the Chapel”. I thought that was an interesting perspective. Anyway, I have been teaching each week on the parables that Jesus taught from the book of Luke. Through these parables I want the people to see into the heart and mind of Jesus and the Father. I think Jesus’ parables are one of the best ways to see how God thinks about things and they reveal the heart of God in an extraordinary way. And I want the people of Kitale to know this heart of God.
In addition to this Julie has been working extra, extra hard with the directors (and our dear friends) of the school Chloe goes to in order to help them start a new international branch of the school called Milimani Christian Homeschooling Community. She has been working very hard with them for over a year to help them get this started and my plan is to let her write the newsletter update for next month and explain, in her own words, this ministry that she has become heavily involved with. I am mentioning it this month because I have been asked to teach a math class at the new school. I accepted this ministry and now get to daily invest into the lives of some lovely young students at the school, as well as doing the morning devotions. But, again, I hope that Julie’s voice can be heard on this ministry next month.

And, now, throw into the mix that I taught a week-long class at the local Bible college on Biblical Financial Management and I can honestly say, I’m tired. But I always enjoy investing into the lives of the future pastors and church leaders that attend the college. Three of my students from this week were from South Sudan and plan, upon graduation, on returning to the war-torn region of their country and spreading the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
We pray that God would continue to bless our feeble efforts, expand His Kingdom in this part of the Earth and glorify His name.

Fellowship and Retreat for 15 Youth from Ubim
Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We want to thank each of our supporters for all your prayers and support. We appreciate all you have done for us and our ministries. God has been faithful in keeping us safe and encouraged. We started the year with a wonderful get together at our church, asking God’s blessing for our country and our church.
We are making many changes in the different ministries to reach out to more people and be more effective. As we have mentioned before, one of the difficulties here is the distance that people live and that lots of people don’t have transportation. Our church has two buses, but even then it would be impossible to go everywhere to pick people up. So, what we are doing is visiting the different places and finding places to have meetings for the youth and the adults.
We are doing visits of different kinds. Some, Kathy and I go, some we take other youth to visit the youth, and Kathy goes visiting with the ladies. This has been great. Pray for us that God will open the doors to more and more homes.
We have rented a building in Iranduba in a better area with more people and it is almost ready to get started. The rent was cheaper, but we have had to do some work on it before we use it.
Last week we brought the youth from the community of Ubim. There were 15. They spent the week with us. Most of them have been coming since we started the work there. We try to do several things with them because there is not much in their communities for them to do. We went fishing, swimming, and played games. Lots of fun!
The mission in Multirão is doing really great. The people are working hard and God has blessed the work.
We are also finishing the back part of the main church, Pedras Vivas, where we have the Sunday school classes.
We want to thank all those who sent special offerings last month. The gift allowed us to have a van fixed that we have been wanting to fix. Along with the gift, God sent a mechanic who knew what the problem was. We are glad because it is an eight-passenger and it is diesel, which will be very useful for us.

Headed to Florida for BFM Conference; 14 Classes Scheduled in Brazil
The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

Dear friends and family,
We hope your end of year 2018 was AWESOME! We totally enjoyed our Christmas with our family. We had our daughter Mary K, her husband Pr. Walmir, and their two daughters Chelsea and Ashley from Brasil, as well as our son Bryan K, his wife Jill, and our other grandchild Briley. It has been over three years since we have all been together. It is great to have family together on such a wonderful holiday where we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Our grandbabies from Brasil just knew that they would see some snow. Just about every day they would ask, “Is it going to snow today?” Sadly, for them, most of our time together was in spring-like weather. So, we enjoyed the attractions in and around Lexington, especially the Christmas lights. Their time here came to an end on the 10th and as we were leaving to take them to the airport there was a small flurry and they cried because they would not be here to see what that flurry would bring. For those of us that would like to pass the winter without snow we do not understand their great desire to see snow, but they have not experienced snow and so desperately wanted to.
So, we the grandparents are escaping the snow and will be in Florida for the BFM Conference. We will also be able to spend some time with my brother there in Florida. We are looking forward to an AWESOME Conference. Please pray for all those who are planning to attend.
We are working diligently on our schedule for 2019 for the Seminary. As of now we have scheduled 14 different classes. We have changed two classes, SBC 107 and 108 New Testament and New Testament to Lexical Greek 108 and Lexical Greek 107. We will be in Brasil in March, June, September and October. The courses for the year are: Biblical Proclamation, Introduction to Apologetics, Survey of Church History, Systematic Theology, Old Testament Survey, Pastoral Ministries, Theology of Evangelism, Lexical Hebrew and Lexical Greek. These classes will be taught in four cities, Orlandia, São Paulo, Garca and our newest city Campinas.
As we are planning this intense year of Seminary classes we need to keep our purpose and goal in mind: (1) training Pastors and Church leaders in Brasil (2) to provide these Church leaders with a solid understanding of God’s truth in the Scriptures and to equip them to effectively evangelize, disciple, and build God’s kingdom in Brasil through the local Church.
I ask you to pray with me for all those involved in these classes: interpreters, translators, local Church leaders who will help with class organization and locations and our American Pastors and Professors who make these classes possible. AWESOME!!! Also pray for travel mercies and added resources to help with scholarships for some of the less fortunate Pastors.
As we travel to each of these locations we ask that you keep us in your prayers. Pray for health, travel mercies, the ones who go and the ones who attend. Also, for stamina for me to meet the needs in each of the locations for the professors and the students so that we bring honor and glory to the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
