Jud and Raquel Hatcher are third generation missionaries serving the Lord in São Paulo, Brazil. They are part of the “SeedFactory” church planting initiative, which is a movement to plant churches in all 26 Brazilian capitals. Since 2006, 43 churches have been started in 5 states.

November 19, 2022

Dear friends,

Thank you for supporting and praying for us. We return to Brazil on December 19, 2022. Pray for us as the country is living through a season of unrest due to the recent presidential election and freedom of speech infringement by the supreme court. I often get asked by dear friends who pray and support us, “What do you plan to do once you return to São Paulo?” We are part of “The Seed Factory Church Plant Initiative.” Our vision is to have a church planting church in the capitol of every state. From the state capital, expand into other cities by sending church planting teams to make disciples and plant church planting churches where each church has its Seed Factory Training Center & Bible Institute/Seminary. A constant cycle of reproducing churches, leadership multiplication, team building, and Christ’s Kingdom expansion. Our purpose in Brazil is to recruit, train, place, and network pastors and leaders globally. Globally? Yes, we pray for Brazilian missionaries with the same vision and purpose to go to neighboring countries and other parts of the world.

Pastoral & Team Training

Pastoral leadership provides vision, Scriptural direction, and acceleration during church planting phases. A church planting team delivers the required synergy to plant and develop a multigenerational strategy.

Equipping & Sending Church Planting Teams to Every State

Theoretical & practical formation through mentorship nurtures the necessary framework for teams to function creatively and cohesively. Churches planting churches, each one with a Seed Factory Training Center to reach other cities.

National Leadership Network

Pastors train pastors & leaders train leaders. Developing a leadership pipeline within the local church that values theological integrity, spiritual accountability, formative mentorship, and metacognition / critical thinking skills under a steward leadership construct that delivers the necessary foundation for a continual leadership formation cycle, multiplication, & succession.

Foster Care Coordination

Foster care in São Paulo remains a novel concept. Through a divine appointment, Raquel engaged in foster care mobilization and coordination, and serves as a strong advocate for at-risk children. Metro São Paulo has 28 million inhabitants and has a large amount of vulnerable & at-risk kids.

Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) Training

Earning and developing a child’s trust often comes with complex challenges and must be overcome relationally. TBRI is a trauma-informed care & empirical intervention approach developed at Texas Christian University. Raquel is a practitioner for TBRI training nationwide.

Salvation Decisions in the Northeast

Last weekend I received news from Pastor Raimundo Pinto and his team in Aracajú, northeastern Brazil. They had a Saturday night youth rally with 40 teenagers and eight salvation decisions. Pray for them as we have embarked on a building project that costs $35,000. If you’d like to assist with resources, please designate your contribution through BFM to “Jud Hatcher – Aracaju Church Plant.”

Leadership Pipeline Training Series

Our current leadership pipeline series (recorded on Zoom and posted on YouTube) was kicked off by two guest speakers: Jason Estes and Bill Repke. We are discussing the need to nurture a strong Biblical Leadership Culture within the local church’s leadership pipeline. The recordings are available on YouTube for pastors to use as a resource and have several hundred views.

Grateful always,
Jud Hatcher

Saturday Night Services in Ubim

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

November 19, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Thank God we are doing well, and things are calm. We pray that all is well with our dear friends and supporters. There is news that the COVID is back and increasing, but here in our area things are calm. Thank God!

Now that our seminars for leaders are complete, we are starting back Sunday school for the children. Getting more members involved. We also plan on visiting a village not far from the church to bring people on the bus.

Our services in homes are doing well. Our plan for the next year is to reach out more and get more people involved. At the village of Ubim, we started having services on Saturday night. Several of the musicians from the church are going and helping with the music. Pray that we can reach more adults and that the youth who have been coming for several years can get more involved. This village has lots of young people and young adults. We pray that God will send a couple who would live there. There is so much that can be done.

Thank God we were able to drill a well for the church. We were using the neighbor’s. We want to ask for your prayers for what we would like to do in the near future. We would like to have a river ministry to go to the people who can only be reached by boat. This was the ministry that Bro. Hatcher and Bro. Bratcher did a lot in this area. These are continuing fruits of the labors of their ministry. We would love to continue this ministry. We are praying what would be best: to buy a boat or rent one. Pray that God will lead us to what would be best.

Thank each of you for your prayers and support! God bless each of you!

Love in Christ,
Odali and Kathy

Fellowship with Disciples, Meals & Studies with Seekers

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is JMHatcher_profile.jpg
Missionaries John and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

November 14, 2022

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It’s Thanksgiving Season and we are very thankful to our Heavenly Father that He has given us many years of fellowship with you. Thank you for your faithful support.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday in France but we always celebrate it as close to the US National holiday as we can. This coming Saturday we will be having Thanksgiving dinner together with Philip, Amanda and their two younger daughters. Camille is in her first year at a University here and Emily is a Senior in High School. We have also invited two couples who have been friends for a long time. Neither of these are believers. The primary way we share the Good News is in encounters and meals together. One couple are parents of Pascaline who trusted the Lord and followed Him in baptism several years ago. She is now doing University studies in the city of Lyon.

Friday night we were surprised by the visit of Marie Theophile. She was a part of our assembly for about ten years along with her parents and siblings before going to University. She is now completing Law School in Northern France. Many young people from our congregation are now in Universities in other regions and countries. Thomas just moved to Italy this past Friday to attend Medical School. We hope and pray that each of these disciples will follow the Lord faithfully where they are.

If you have prayed for our newest Bible study in L’Union, we have encouraging news. God is definitely at work in these meetings. Attention and participation has been great. Please continue to pray for the salvation of the seekers who need Christ and are attending these Bible studies. Since the good majority are lost and have practically no familiarity with the Scriptures, we are reading and discussing the first few chapters of Genesis and then moving to the Gospel of John.

These are some of the highlights of what God is doing here. We thought you would like to know!

Serving Christ along with you,
John and Judy

Modeling and Teaching the Word of God

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Profile-Pic_Roger-and-Julie-Tate-1.jpg
The Tates have served the Lord in Kitale, Kenya since January 2008. Their main ministry is church planting.

November 10, 2022

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ,

               Modeling and teaching.

Biblical modeling and teaching is exactly what I am trying to do and accomplish here in Kenya for current and future Kenyan church leaders. And, fortunately, I get plenty of opportunities for doing both.

There is something I try and keep in mind as I model and teach future Kenyan church leaders. It actually comes from the books of Ezra and Nehemiah in the Old Testament.

First, Ezra. What did he do? The Bible says that when Ezra returned to Jerusalem with the other Israelites after seventy years of captivity in Babylon that Ezra focused on three things. This, in essence, is what I’m trying to model and teach. Look at Ezra 7:10 to see my own model:

  1. Ezra set his heart to STUDY the Law of the Lord.

It is the Word of God that gives us direction in life, in ministry and most importantly in our relationship with God. My desire is to set my own heart to study the Word of God and I want my Kenyan students to do the same.

2. Ezra set his heart to DO the Law of the Lord

One thing I reiterate over and over to my students, or church members, or anyone else who will listen is that we can know the Word of God very well, but it doesn’t do us any good unless we actually DO it and follow it. A disciple of Jesus is someone who FOLLOWS Jesus. We are trying to make and multiply disciples of Jesus. I also tell anyone who will listen: “A person who knows 90% of the Bible but only follows 10% of what they know is far less mature than a believer who knows only 10% of the Bible but follows 90% of what they know.

3. Ezra set his heart to TEACH the Word of the Lord

I have set my heart to teach the Word of God to any and every Kenyan person who is willing to hear it. I know I have few skills and abilities, but I can teach the word of God with passion and I pray that the Kenyan people and especially the future leaders of the churches in Kenya catch that same passion for teaching the Word of God to the rest of the Kenyan nation as well.

Second, Nehemiah. What did he and his contemporaries do? Listen to Nehemiah 8:8 – “They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.” Awesome! When they read and preached from the Word of God they also “gave the sense of it clearly” so that the hearers could understand completely. It is one of the hallmarks of my ministry to make the Word of God as simple to understand and follow as possible. That’s not hard for a simple man like me. But I want my Kenyan hearers to UNDERSTAND. I want them to understand, then follow and love Jesus, and then expand the kingdom of Jesus to the rest of Kenya and beyond.

Hey, y’all, I want the Word of God to come alive in this country and start a revolution of following Jesus and glorifying God. “Gracious and loving God, may this happen in my own life and in the lives of your beloved Kenyan people.  Amen.”

Blessings,
Roger, Julie & Chloe

Young Couple Headed to Portugal as Missionaries

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Wacaser_Profile-2019-683x1024.jpg
Bobby and Charlene Wacaser have served the Lord as church planters in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil, since 1985.

October 22, 2022

Dear Friends,

The young couple from our church, Yago and Manoela, have received their work visas to go to Portugal and have already purchased their airline tickets for November 22. Our church will be hosting a sending off meeting and gift shower before they travel. Their visas came out a couple of months sooner than expected, but this is good news, and they will be able to get settled in Portugal before the Christmas holidays. We are still praying and discussing ministry strategy with them and are guiding our church in how and how much we can support them. If you believe that the Lord is leading you or your church to partner with us in their support, feel free to contribute with a designated offering “Wacaser-Portugal Mission”.

Our home church just held an evangelistic drama presentation based on the story of Esther in the Bible. We had over 70 of our church members involved in this presentation in one form or another. We practiced, built, painted, sewed, and recorded music and voices for over 4 months in orders to produce a quality presentation with a gospel invitation at the conclusion. We received more than a dozen public responses to the invitation at the two meetings. Our “next steps” discipleship team is following up with Bible lessons for new believers.

I traveled to meet with Projeto Vida, our itinerate evangelistic team, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. We were thrilled to see how the Lord worked through our 12 volunteers in the public schools where we shared the gospel to 2300 students and staff within two weeks, resulting in over 140 professions of faith. The first school where our team was scheduled to minister got a message one day before our presentation that we would not be welcome. They canceled the engagement because we were evangelical (the principal is a spiritist). Almost immediately after the cancellation, we got a call from the secretary of education from a neighboring city inviting our team to come minister to a huge assembly of 4 schools at one location. We ended up reaching four times as many people than we would have reached at the other school, had it not canceled on us. The Lord’s plan is always the greatest.

Charlene and I are doing very well, and we thank you for your prayers for us and your faithful support.

In Christ’s love,
Bobby and Charlene Wacaser

Building a Leadership Team

October 21, 2022

Dear friends,

Thank you for your financial and prayer support. We could not make it without you holding the ropes and encouraging us to keep pressing forward in the calling God has placed in our lives.

Family News

Laura completes her cochlear hearing therapy in November and is currently able to hear clearly through the cochlear implant in her left ear. I underwent a three-hour surgery on my right shoulder last week to address four issues on my rotator cuff and will be in an arm sling for 6 weeks. Next week I will undergo surgery on my nose to correct a breathing concern. Everyone is doing well in school as we plan to transition back to Brazil in the middle of the academic year. We are excited to return.

Ministry Testimony

Over a year ago, the Lord placed Pastor Sílvio in my heart as I noticed how the pandemic crippled his ministry and church. He was saved under my grandfather John Hatcher’s work in Paraná, called by God into the Gospel ministry, and mentored under him. He has always been resilient in ministry, but the struggle was more challenging than ever before. We sponsored his family (wife and three young adult sons) to participate in the church ministries conference at Nova Baptist Church in Manaus that occurred last August (a travel distance of 3k miles by plane). They returned home revitalized and with a renewed passion for ministry. The Lord has opened the doors for a weekly 15-minute radio spot on three different regional radio stations and various new bridging opportunities. Please, see the pictures of Pastor Sílvio and Kelly at the radio station and Kelly sharing the Gospel message at a school. Even while Stateside, we continue to encourage and mentor fellow laborers in Brazil. Through your financial giving and prayers, we can assist leaders and their churches in reenergizing and mobilizing strategically for the Gospel.

Considering our ministry strategy, I desire to share (and inspire you) how we go about building teams for church planting. We aim to recruit, train, place, and network leaders for church planting and disciple-making in Brazil. This is part of the training framework I use:

Building a Leadership Team

When building a team, a Christian leader must rely on Divine wisdom, trust in the sovereignty of God and be passionately committed to the vision and mission. Notice the instructions given to Jeremiah in the Old Testament, where God provides a visual aid for the prophet to understand His sovereignty in how He chooses to change the world through His chosen people, the Israelites: “So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel (Jeremiah 18:3-6).

Furthermore, in the New Testament, we read about clay and its usage in 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 where the Apostle Paul writes: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” God is in control.

Thankfully, in all circumstances, including team building, leaders can have the same confidence in God’s choice and plan for His people. Notice where Paul expounds on God’s lesson to him “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-11). It is not about the power that a team or a leader has, but rather the power He retains yet chooses to dispense through ordinary people. Once understood that all things reside in the hands of God, a leader can begin to build a solid team. Trust in God and proceed with the vision He has given you.

Building a solid team is a foundational step to moving forward with the vision God has given a leader. First and foremost, the criteria for selecting a team member requires a personal relationship with the Savior and personal integrity – this is paramount at the beginning and throughout any endeavor!

I have always seen the importance of having a variety of personalities and team member profiles as part of the leadership team, which included extravert personalities, such as sanguine (i.e., Peter) and choleric (i.e., Paul) and introverts, such as phlegmatic (i.e., Luke) and melancholic (Moses). After reading Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” (2002), I narrowed it down even further. So, what are the necessary people for a core leadership team? Gladwell posits that team composition is foundational for developing teams and proposes that a successful team must have a connector, a maven, and a salesman. Connectors are the individuals in a community who have befriended or know vast amounts of people and make it their habit to make introductions and feel comfortable building connections with people. Mavens are information specialists; the team relies upon this person to connect them with new information and insights. Mavens are an excellent source of knowledge because they love to stay current on various subjects and are typically well-versed in numerous fields. Salesmen are persuaders, highly charismatic individuals with incredible communication skills. They have a way about them that draws people in beyond mere words, which inspires others to want to follow and agree with them. Salesmen are typically very likable individuals. (PS. None of these individuals substitute the work of the Holy Spirit in making disciples, each one is simply a jar of clay in the hands of the almighty God.)

Once the core leadership team is assembled, the following steps are: 1) getting to know one another and continually developing trust as a team. 2) Define short, mid, and long-range goals based on the mission. 3) Establish team values and personal conduct principles 4) Establish and agree on individual roles. 5) Develop an accountability framework and plan. 6) Agree upon and commit to a team contract.

When building a team, a leader must rely on Divine wisdom, trust in the sovereignty of God, be passionately committed to the vision and mobilize a solid team to accomplish the mission at hand. I will continue in next month’s publication.

Grateful always,
Judson Hatcher

First Graduation in the Master’s Program at Bluegrass Baptist Seminary

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Profile-Pic_AJ-Barbara-Hensley-higher-quality-1021x1024.jpg
The Hensleys have served the Lord in Brazil, South America since 1996. They have worked with orphanages, started mission points, established churches, and are presently conducting a seminary to train Brazilian pastors.

October 18, 2022

Dear friends and family,

It is a great blessing when you can see God’s work coming together with your focus on missions! We have just completed our first graduation in the Master’s program. We had 21 people who completed all the required courses. However, 11 of the Pastors still had to write their thesis papers and chose to not participate until those were completed.

The first 10 graduated with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies. I was awarded the same degree by the students and the Professors. The 11 Pastors will receive a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministries. They have also completed three additional courses: Greek, Hebrew, and Thesis writing for their Master’s degree.

One of the blessings for me was that one of the students in their graduating class was a member of our last church started in Caraguatatuba. She was a great help in that church – Sunday School teacher, visitation helper, and she perfected her English while there. She also helped Barbara with translation when we had groups from the States. She has now moved to São Paulo to complete her education and was able to come to the Seminary while studying in the University there. Isn’t it AWESOME how GOD works in lives who are serving Him?

In class, there is usually one person who tries to question the Professors in their Biblical knowledge. Well, Bluegrass Baptist Seminary was not exempt to that type of person. But to show you how mighty our God is, not only did this person question the Professors, but he did it constantly. But our Professors were able to answer every questions and this gentleman came on graduation day and asked for forgiveness from the Professors and all the students. Everyone forgave him without question.

Our upcoming classes are being planned, and Barb and I will be going back to Brazil in January. We will be setting up new locations and talking to the Pastors of the new churches. Continue to pray for us as we travel and for our health.

In His service,
Aj and Barbara
