ROGER +

JULIE TATE

Roger and Julie Tate have served the Lord in Kitale, Kenya since January 2008.

Roger’s main ministry is indigenous church planting. Their first term was an eye-opening experience for the whole family as they learned firsthand about the challenges they would face in Kenya. These challenges of dependency and expectations greatly affected their original method for church planting.

After learning many things through trial and error Roger’s focus now is on simple, Biblical teaching and sensible, heartfelt worship with a focus on knowing, loving and following Jesus. Roger’s latest ministry is the Upper Room Baptist Chapel, a new church ministry in Kitale that he started in October of 2018 and has been pastoring and teaching ever since. Roger also spends time investing in the lives of future church leaders as he teaches Biblical courses at a local Theological and Pastoral Training college.
After many years having her only ministry be to her family in her home, Julie is now ministering to other families around Kitale by being the voluntary head-teacher for a locally owned and operated, small, private, Christian school. Milimani Christian Homeschooling Community started in January of 2019 with nine students in grades one through five. With the help of two local families and fellow missionary Carrie Radford, MCHC successfully finished its first year and has begun its second – this time with fourteen students including three high schoolers. The joy of Julie’s heart is to watch children’s lives transformed not only by Christian curriculum that glorifies Jesus, but also by daily interactions with staff who have been specially trained to teach in a way that ministers the love of Jesus to them.

The Tate Family is from Dayton, Ohio and is sent out by Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bellbrook, Ohio, which has been Roger’s home church since 1980 and Julie’s home church since 1991. Roger was raised in church, but was not saved until the age of 20. Julie also grew up in church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She and her family were faithful members of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Burton, Michigan.  Julie made a profession of faith at a young age but came to know Jesus as a young adult. Roger and Julie were childhood sweethearts and they have been blessed with four children: Emily (25) – Married to Igor Levit, Amy (19), Josiah (18), and Chloe (5). Emily and Amy now reside in the US.
