Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Thank you for taking a few moments to read about what God is doing around us. We thank God for each of you who partner with us as we proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ in Southern France and seek to make disciples to Jesus.
Our son David and his family arrived a few days ago from their home in Chicago to spend a good part of the summer with us. We are delighted by this opportunity to spend precious time with them. It has the added benefit of keeping us younger.

Samuel, a young man who trusted Christ and was baptized in our church here in Tournefeuille a few years ago, was united in matrimony with a delightful young lady this past weekend. Though they now live in Paris, the marriage was held here to make it possible for local friends, family and spiritual family to participate. Philip’s family led and presented the music. The bride was saved and baptized in the Paris Center Baptist Church where Samuel is now a member. The mobility of our present world was clearly exemplified by the numerous nationalities of those present. It is a reminder to all of us that God often opens doors to other people groups by bringing them to our doorstep. Are there others in your community that you need to get to know so that you can present the Gospel in action and word?
Yesterday we had a packed house for the Sunday meeting. This is a bit rare in the month of July which is vacation time. Other than the previous week when nearly everyone in our assembly was out of town, we have had good attendance this summer. We are now studying the letter to the Galatians. One of the men in our assembly has expressed the delight that he sees in this book where we are reminded that God has saved us to set us free. He says that this is quite a contrast to the religion in which he was reared that constantly laid down requirements and never gave assurance.
A couple weeks ago Philip’s family, Judy and I had the privilege of having dinner and an evening of fellowship together with Joachim and his family. He was the first person baptized here. Philip and Amanda were the primary disciplers of this family which was with us for several years. We miss them greatly since they moved away but are grateful that they are actively involved in a good church near Hamburg, Germany.
Thank you for your active participation in what God is doing here and may He make you fruitful as you serve him where you are.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are able to thank God for an answered prayer. I have reported in past newsletters that I was looking for a room in town that I could rent and use in order to start up a new church here in Kitale. If you were following my former reports you would know the following: First, before leaving for the States for a month, I had located a room and agreed on a price with the owner, only to have the rate doubled when I went to sign the lease. Second, while I was in the States I had a couple of Kenyan friends who agreed to look for a place for me while I was away. And, now, one of those places my friends found has finally come to fruition and I can finally say we have a room and have signed the lease and everything is official. The room is on the third floor of a building in town, is located in a relatively quiet area, has plenty of natural lighting, good security, and even access to toilets. This may not sound like much to be excited about but finding all these things in one location is quite challenging here in Kitale. The portion of the room which I rented is about 20′ by 25′ and can probably comfortably fit 30 people (and even more uncomfortably). If we are somehow blessed with more people than can fit in the room, then we will be glad to come up with alternative solutions to that problem in the future. Since the time I rented the room I have been preparing it for use. The tile floor needed fixing, the doors and handles needed replacing, and the broken windows needed repairing. Also, the original room was quite large, and I could not afford to rent the entire space but only a section of it. Thus, I had to build a partition wall across the room to block off my section. Other preparatory activities are also ongoing in order to get the room ready for use. Please continue to pray for this ongoing work.
Again, I believe Kitale needs a church that:
- Teaches the truth of God’s Word in a simple, clear, understandable manner
- Worships God in Spirit and truth and simplicity
- Loves, follows and obeys Jesus
- Desires to spread the Kingdom of God
These are such rare qualities in churches here that I felt compelled to start one and pastor it myself.
One example of the reason why a church like this is necessary is a young man named Elphas that I have been meeting with. Elphas and I meet in a dungy, musty, smelly basement of a hotel in town. We get together there to drink tea and talk about the many questions he has about the Bible and about Jesus. This week we spent two hours just talking about what happens to people when they die, what and where is heaven, where do the spirits of believers and unbelievers go after death, and how a person can know he will go to heaven. After every question he asks me I say, “Elphas, I can only tell you what the Bible says about this” and then we go to the Scriptures and investigate what God has said in His Word. I am trying to show Elphas that it matters not what any man might say but only what God’s Word says. This week Elphas told me, “After talking with you I realize all my pastors are lying to me”. I don’t know exactly what he meant by this statement and I didn’t feel like I should follow up on it. However, it did reinforce to me that there are many Kenyans who are starving for the Word of God and wanting to know what it really means to follow Jesus and to know God.

Headed Home after a Couple Months in the States

Dear Brethren,
On May 1st I was visiting our church at Santa Rosa. They were celebrating their 19th anniversary. The house was full and overflowing. Really enjoyed preaching to them. During the message some of our members noticed that my voice sounded different. The next day I was down with the flu. I already had some other health issues, so this really hit me hard.
Two weeks later I was still down while our church was having her missions conference and 89th birthday celebration. I missed out on all the fun. Sunday morning, I missed out on the Lord’s supper and baptism. In fact, I was supposed to baptize my granddaughter Melany. Instead my son-in-law performed the baptism. We added 37 new members.
The next day Bev and I went on a 3-day journey to the United States. We have been here for almost 2 months. Since arriving I have been treated by 9 doctors and countless nurses. I have had 2 surgeries and a bunch of other procedures. My recovery period will be finished in another month. On Monday, July 16th we will be returning to Brazil, God willing.
Many of you knew about this and Bev and I are so grateful to all who have helped in so many ways. For those of you who knew nothing about all of this, let me reassure you that all is well, as far as I know! To all of you: I will not bore you with all the details about the stuff that has been bothering me. Just pray that I will be well enough to carry on what God has called me to do. Once again, thanks to all.
While here in the States I have been able to get some much needed rest. Most of the time I have been reading, walking and watching the World Cup! However, I have been in touch with many of our workers and leaders scattered over a wide area down home. Things are going pretty good. In fact, the church baptized another group of over 30 new members. They also had our annual month of intense Bible study, Scripture memorization and personal evangelism. More about that later. I have even been doing marriage counseling online!
Thanks to all for your understanding during this time of absence from the field. Please continue to pray for my complete recovery. There is a ton of work waiting on me when I get home.

Dear friends,
FAMILY
We are in the middle of the Winter Season in Brazil and students receive a month break between school semesters. So, our children are enjoying it as best as possible, despite the cold. We praise the Lord for their first semester grades as it reflects their dedication and hard work at school. Everyone is in good health, except for Benjamin (10 yrs). He has a dry cough that is lasting several months and doctors have not found the cause or solution. Melissa (6 yrs) lost two of her baby teeth last week. Everyone will go to the dentist this month for routine dental check-up.

MINISTRY
The three homes where we meet weekly with folks are doing well. The home church concept is sinking in well with the new believers. The “need” for a temple is still something most struggle with, especially those with a strong Catholic background. There is always some rotation of people, but as a rule those who are maturing in their faith are increasingly engaged and reaching out to friends and family. I am currently counseling four couples and am encouraged that they have reached out for help. I have one-on-one discipleship with six men that are in preparation to assist in leading their home church. We are currently going through the book of Philippians. Look at what we developed:
30 Action Principles to Live an Extraordinary Life in the Eyes of God. (Extracted from Philippians 1)
- Greet and treat people gracefully.
- When you think of a person, break out in exclamations of thanksgiving to God.
- Make each exclamation a trigger to pray for them.
- Pray with a glad heart.
- Bless and encourage people to flourish.
- Express and demonstrate gratitude to those who assist you through tough times.
- Love people like Christ does – love much, love well, love sincerely & love intelligently.
- Live a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul. Live a circumspect and exemplary life.
- Make Jesus Christ attractive to all – be contagious!
- Allow hardship to have the opposite of its intended effect.
- Glow & shine, Jesus’ message does prosper.
- Pique people’s curiosity by living joyfully, especially when in hardship.
- Speak fearlessly about God, about the Messiah.
- Don’t be jealous of those who seek the spotlight, even if they think they are taking advantage of you.
- Cheer people on, even if they have ulterior motives for speaking of Jesus.
- Rejoice, keep celebrating; for we know how this life on earth finishes.
- Pray faithfully and respond generously.
- Trust that everything the Lord wants to do in and through you will be done.
- Don’t expect to be embarrassed in the least.
- Continue the course, live for Jesus.
- Hardship shouldn’t shut you up, it should be your pulpit.
- Make Philippians 1.21 your life verse: “for to me to live is Christ, and to die is truly gain”.
- Consistently benefit others, more than benefiting yourself.
- Be a great companion. Look forward to being with people, to praise Christ and enjoy each other.
- Influence people in such a way that it becomes a credit to the Message of Christ.
- Maintain a righteous conduct, whether someone important is looking, or not.
- Stand united with your brothers and sisters, contending for people’s trust in the Message.
- Don’t be frightened in the slightest by the opposition.
- Be courageous and focused, the power of God is with you. There is victory in Jesus!
- Trust in Christ and suffer for Him. Suffering is as much a gift as the trusting.
TRUCKERS’ CHAOTIC PROTEST
On Wednesday (May 23rd) at 6pm, the kids and I drove onto the São Paulo beltway to attend my birthday party at another part of town. This 15-minute drive on the expressway turned into lengthy nightmare. We found ourselves stuck in traffic for over 3 hours in a stretch only 4 miles long. Truck drivers were protesting at the exit we needed. There was no access to make a U-turn and try a different route. It was “stop and go” on the four lanes headed south. Truckers were upset at the diesel fuel price increase and were blocking the roads. I was able to make a U-turn 4 miles past the protest, but due to blockades on other roads my only option was to drive back into the main protest. It was faster on the way back as the Military Police were had arrived at the scene. Well, we missed the party and returned home. I sang “Happy Birthday” with the kids and ate cake upon arriving at the house. Raquel was already at the location we were trying to get to. She returned home the next morning.
On Thursday, school bus drivers and motorcycle delivery drivers announced they would also join the protests. Chaos was everywhere in São Paulo. The truckers’ strike lasted over a week. Distribution of all products came to a halt. Ten days into the protests oil refinery workers nationwide announced they would go on strike for 72 hrs. Gas stations went almost a week without fuel. Before running out, some stations were charging up to US$12.00/gallon. When the gas station in our neighborhood received fuel after midnight, little did they know that by 7am a line would form that was over 2 miles long. Each person limited to 5 liters. By 4pm, they sold out. The grocer next door to the station said there were multiple fights throughout the day.
Most schools were closed for at least 4 days. There were several riots and tire burning blockades by protesters on main roads and highways during this time. Grocery stores had no produce and hardly any meat. We were stuck at home for 6 days.
Despite the chaos, the population in general were in favor of the strike against the diesel fuel tax increase.

Working on a Communication System for Seminary
The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

Friends and family,
As I am writing this letter we are working on our system of communication through the computer for Caragua Baptist Seminary. For example, the students want to know what their grades are from the tests they have taken, the courses that are being offered, the locations where they will be offered and the time frame for the courses. Sounds easy, right? Well, put language difficulties and translation into the mix, add having to go through multiple people, the desire to have the correct spelling, grammar correctness and correct sentence structure……now you can see the problems. We are also hoping that my third language (hillbilly) won’t interfere much with what we are trying to do. SOLUTIONS: We are forming a group of pastors there and here, mixing them with several IT professionals and we are off and running. So here is a BIG prayer request, that we will be able to integrate all these different folks together to jump one more hurdle so that we can have an AWESOME Seminary.
One of our students has put the roof on the building that he and his members are building. They need the doors and the bathrooms to be able to occupy their building. But in the meantime, they are meeting in his home. As we continue to help these church starts we need two things: prayer warriors and financial help. As in any place, they encounter many problems when trying to do something for God. Workers for construction are few and the money for material is even less. So I know all of you are prayer warriors, so please put these Brasilian pastors on your prayer list and if you can spare some financial support, please send it to BFM and mark it “Church Starts in Brasil”. The seminary is helping three pastors who are starting mission works but our ability to help is small. But with many of us giving a little, it amounts to a lot. And we all know that a little is a lot with God in control.
My health issues as of today are good. I have a major appointment the first part of August. I request that you pray for me that I will have improvement in the cancer battle and maybe have a “vacation” from the medication. Over a year and a half ago I was told that the choices that I had were surgery with 38 radiation treatments with follow-up medication or expect 6 to 9 months of life. Well here it is almost 2 years later and I am looking forward to a vacation from meds. How AWESOME is the God we have!!!

Our next Seminary classes are in October. On that date we will be having four classes: two in Orlandia and two in São Paulo city. Our plans had been to have classes in June but the trucker strike in Brasil almost paralyzed the country. In Caraguatatuba they went almost 3 weeks with no deliveries to their town. There was only gas for the emergency vehicles; the grocery stores and the farmers markets had very little stock—and what they had was price hacked. You know what I am talking about, the merchants raised prices because they could. Now the strike is over, but guess what…the food prices have not gone back down. Go figure!!!! So needless to say, Mary and Walmir and all the other Brasilian pastors are struggling to make ends meet. Keep them in your prayers.
Please continue to pray for our endeavors as we continue the work that God has provided for us as we live in the USA for my treatments and work in Brasil as Missionaries representing Jesus Christ because of your support through Baptist Faith Missions.
As we have the Seminary classes, we constantly watch for the men of God who are anxious to work for the Lord. These are the ones whom we will chose to be the next church planters. We cannot forget the Pastors and their churches here in the States. The pastors who give of their time to come to Brasil to teach in the Seminary for FREE and the churches that support them as they come. Without them our dream for a Seminary to help the Brasilian pastors would have never gone as far as it has. Praise God for all those who have a hand in this endeavor.
We are working toward establishing 3 permanent locations to have the Seminary classes. From these locations we can meet the needs of many Brasilian pastors. Please pray that God would lead our search.

Winter in Brazil, but Hearts are Warmed by the Gospel

Dear Friends,
Here in southern Brazil we’ve just entered into our winter season, but our ministries are hotter than ever! Our traveling evangelistic team returned this week from 3 weeks of outreach into the interior towns of our state. The spiritual needs of the people are so great and God used our teams in some dramatic ways.
Shortly after our gospel presentation in one public school one of our team members went to the restroom. When he went in, there were four teenagers crying because of what they had seen and heard in our presentation. One of the gospel skits that was presented characterized a family that was torn and ravaged because of drugs and alcohol addiction and these teens were living in situations very similar. In the skit, the family found Christ as the answer and solution to their struggles and these youth realized that they too needed Jesus. Our team member used this opportunity to more fully share the gospel with them and all four surrendered their lives to Christ right there in the restroom. Later that night, at an outdoor meeting, they came to the front of the crowd to make their profession of faith in the Lord public.
At another meeting, a young man was impressed with the message that God is a loving “Father,” because, in his personal life, his father was the source of his greatest suffering. Because of his father’s alcoholism, his mother had abandoned the family and his father’s anger was poured out on the young man in frequent violent rages. On one occasion, the young man’s father fractured his son’s cranium by beating on him so violently. In anger and hopelessness, the young man ran away from home and got involved in drugs himself. He got caught by the police and went to jail and felt like no one loved him. He had recently been released from jail when he passed by the park where our team was presenting the gospel. He stopped to watch and listen to our presentations and testimonies. The Lord opened his heart to accept the grace and forgiveness that Christ offers and he surrendered to Him. He came to talk to one team member personally afterward and shared how joyful he was to sense the love and forgiveness of his heavenly Father even though his earthly father showed no care for him.
I gave three of our “preacher boys” an opportunity to preach at our home church this month and all three did very well. For Ruvian, it was his first time preaching publicly and he demonstrated a good grasp of God’s word and an ability to communicate its teaching to the people. I will continue to train all three and plan to give them more opportunities in the near future.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It’s the 4th of July here as well as where you live, but it is business as usual here! This morning I was out doing banking and Judy was having a meeting with the ladies of the Tournefeuille Church discussing plans for children’s Sunday School classes for the next few months. We hope you are enjoying the holiday along with your family.
The past weekend was filled with fellowship. Sunday, after the morning service, the church families met at a nearby park to enjoy a shared picnic. The evening before, Judy and I had a dinner together with some of the folks in Mazere where we worked for over a dozen years. God continues to be at work using the believers there.
The month has also included large social events with folks who are not from the church. One of these was our neighborhood annual pot luck dinner. God has often opened doors during these gatherings and this year was no different. We had excellent discussions with some present. One neighbor told me that he had not forgotten our earlier discussions and certainly wanted to come attend a service.
Another event, held a couple of weeks ago at Philip and Amanda’s home, was a piano recital of her students. The place was packed and snack and chat time followed. I had a lengthy discussion about spiritual things with a young married man who lives across the street from Philip and Amanda. These, along with the daily contacts that we have with our neighbors are the primary means of being the light of Jesus in our communities. France is a very secular society. Roughly half of those who make up the population proclaim without hesitation to be atheist and there is a general aversion to religion, so it is out in the community that we share Christ.
The witness of believers of all ages is important. We continue to see God at work through middle and high school students who are part of our church. During this past year there have been 13 youth from our assembly and 18 others who are their friends who have come to youth meetings. Typically there 15-20 kids at each meeting where a clear presentation and discussion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ take place.

Dear praying friends,
We hope this finds each of you doing well and we appreciate each of you so much. God is so good, from the blessings He allows us to have, to His protection, His leading, and His guidance. We are so thankful to each of you and ask that you would please continue to keep us in your prayers.
Last month, I (Nathan) shared about the new immigration process that requires missionaries and other foreigners in the country to get their documents verified in Nairobi, the capital city. We are so grateful that the documentation verification was successful, although challenging. There were reports of huge, long lines very early in the morning, and that it was best to get there very early. A friend of ours had stood in line for seven hours waiting, so this was definitely a challenge. God was good and the verification was successful. Please pray for others that are either in the process, or have not been able to get theirs processed yet. God is in control of all these things and we trust Him. He is so faithful. A verse I like is 2 Timothy 2:13, which says “If we believe not, yet He abideth faithful: He cannot deny himself.” What a precious promise from the Word of God.
Please pray for me, as I (Nathan) am continuing with the discipleship program with a younger Kenyan man in the Rafiki village. The roads out to his village have definitely gotten worse, so I leave earlier now in the mornings to get there, allowing time to go slower to avoid as many potholes as I can. I always leave when it is light outside, but sometimes there is a fog that hovers over the road, so I go slow, with my light on, etc. I would appreciate prayer for safety on the roads as I travel there to his village. We have covered many teachings in the Word of God, and I pray that he continues to grow spiritually and have a desire to reach others. Please pray for him, and myself, as we continue along studying the Word of God.
In sorrowful news, earlier in June, there was a plane crash within Kenya in a forest area. It was a smaller plane, but 10 occupants tragically passed away from their injuries. Plane travel is generally very safe and low risk, so there are many inquiries and investigations into what happened. Please pray for all affected in this tragedy.
We are so thankful to each of you for your prayers, sacrificial giving, and encouragement. You are each such a blessing to us and we appreciate your mindfulness of missions around the world. Have a great upcoming 4th of July holiday with friends and family.
