Children’s Ministry Growing; Running Out of Space

The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

February 4, 2017

Friends and family,

Well January has been a very active month. We have been trying to complete needed construction for Sunday School space upstairs. We had a group from Mt. Eden Baptist Church that came to celebrate the New Year with us. While with us, they helped us with this construction. They helped with painting, electric problems, doors, fans, closets, shelving, and they provided the financing for these projects. Also this church, under the leadership of my longtime friend Pastor Foy, helped the missionary to the Indians in Rio de Janeiro with their home.

We continually live and worship around and in construction projects. The upside of dust, walking around materials and lots of cleaning in the kitchen when we feed the children on Sunday mornings is that we are a growing Church and our members are very understanding. HOW AWESOME is the Lord we serve!!!!

Speaking of children, what a blessing. Pastor Walmir has been talking with a couple in our area who also work with children about bringing those children to worship with us. They were very happy to find a Church that would welcome them as they had been rejected by various other Churches as they had been told that to many children would disrupt their services. These children, about 20 to 25, live around our neighborhood so we were a great match. With this joining of work, our Sunday school grew about 30%.

Pray that the Lord would supply more space for their growing children’s ministry.

Well, while this mission group was here we had planned to have a Vacation Bible School. So we planned to have the children to come in the afternoon and stay through the church service on Wednesday night. We visited the neighborhood nearby and was expecting around 40-60 kids. But oh me of little faith. As the Bible School was beginning, I was taking care of a transportation problem, so when I finally got upstairs, WHAT A SURPRISE. We did not have enough chairs, much less enough space nor enough teachers nor materials. While we were expecting 40-60 children, imagine my surprise when I saw that there were 108 children packed in our upstairs.

Well we began to divide and conquer—we put some downstairs and left some upstairs, ran out and bought more hot dogs and drinks, and an AWESOME time was had by all. GOD is so AWESOME!!

Now Sunday school is more challenged and with one class offsite already, we are out of space again even before the building is finished. These are good problems to have, don’t you think? Just so you know, we have a lot behind our building that would solve these problems (hint, hint, hint). Pray with us for the Lord to supply.

I will be in the States for the next shot (which I thought was to be the last) in February, but I had to come home sooner as I was having some severe pain, not necessarily related to my cancer problem. Because of this pain I had to have lots of tests. Though they did not find the cause of the pain they have been able to tell me that they see no cancer in these tests. God is so good!!!

Plan a mission trip, see the work, have fellowship, make friends that could change your life and get out of your comfort zone as Barb always says. Come on down to Caraguatuba. The light is on and we will turn your bed down. Come see what your mission dollars are doing.

In His service,
Aj and Barb

Unrest in Kitale Decreasing; Pray for Daughters’ Health

Nathan and Carrie Radford serve the Lord in Kitale, Kenya. Their main ministries include indigenous church planting, a prison ministry, and a hospital ministry for mothers with premature babies.

February 1, 2017

Dear praying friends,

Another month has come and gone, and we are now into 2017. We pray that each of you are doing well, and thank you for your interest in missions. This update will share prayer requests as well as updates.

We praise the Lord for the past several months, the unrest in Kitale has gone down. We are getting good reports and thankful for the Lord’s watch care and protection. Please pray with us that the unrest will cease completely and things will go back to normal. God is in control and we trust Him.

Our daughters are continuing along in school full time at Calvary Baptist Academy in Hurricane, WV. This has been a good time for them, as they are learning to take responsibility, getting much needed socialization with children their age, and getting involved in school activities. We feel this has been a very much needed time for them and are thankful for this experience. Please continue to pray with us that God will bring families to Kitale with children their age that they can plan with. We continue to pray to God to help with this and would appreciate your prayers as well.

Please also pray for the health of our daughter McKenna, as she has been struggling some with asthma. I (Nathan) have struggled with asthma over the course of the years, and we are trying to help her with her struggle with it also. Both her and Camille have low immune systems, and seem to get sick easily, so we appreciate prayers for their health.

God is so faithful and it is a privilege to serve Him. How we need to be thankful to Him for His leading, guidance, protection, and peace. God keeps all His promises and is so faithful. Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace , and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” We can trust God with the future, knowing He will lead and guide each step of the way.

Adjusting to Various Challenges in São Paulo

February 1, 2017

Dear friends,
Thank you for praying and supporting us. Your love for us is always an encouragement. In this newsletter, I will share about our family’s health, kids’ education and ministry. Come visit us in São Paulo to see firsthand what the Lord is doing.

Family
The end of year has been an interesting one for all of us. Raquel, Sarah and Melissa are in good health. Laura has an ear infection that just doesn’t want to leave her alone. The antibiotics don’t seem to be having much effect. She is on a third round of medication and we are praying that she will recuperate. Benjamin has complained of stomach aches for a while. We took him to the ER a few weeks ago, but the exams were inconclusive. There are still more tests to run as we search for the root problem. I’ve had a lot of muscle issues. My hands and arms will typically swell up, go numb and my joints ache after carrying heavy luggage or after driving long stretches or holding heavy items for long periods of time.

This year we opted to homeschool our children using the A Beka curriculum. We have never done this before and it has proven to be a challenge for us. We are in the process of reconsidering our decision and enrolling them in a local school.
We ask that you pray for our health and our children’s education.

Ministry
We have connected with Igreja Batista Memorial de Alphaville (IBMA) here in São Paulo. Sidney Costa is the senior pastor and is a friend since 2004. He is a great leader and has coached us along this transition process (i.e. housing, local culture, friendship, banking advice, etc.).

I have an office at the church and lead the English and Spanish Communities, which are extensions of IBMA. The average attendance on Sundays is 90-100 people between the two communities. We are excited by this connection as it is an intensely missional church and extremely focused on Jesus as it plans to branch out into all regions of Greater São Paulo. In March, a new location is queued to begin in a section of the city called Berrine. We are enthusiastic with what the Lord is doing.

I am scheduled to be in the States for 9 days as of February 22. I will attend the Liberty University Pastoral Leadership Advisory Board, led by Dr. Dave Adams. I shall also meet with several pastors and churches in VA, TN & KY. Pray as the Lord opens doors.

Adjusting
We have made several new friends since we arrived in São Paulo, including the English-speaking expatriate community. We are still adjusting to pace in this massive metropolis. While the region has a lot to offer and has its advantages, traffic is always a killer. Getting to different areas where we must go can often take up to 2 hours. This, whilst dealing with crazy motorcycles that weave between cars and often bump into cars. Getting around town without Google maps or Waze is almost impossible.

Finding a good car mechanic that is close to home has been a tough one. The Lord provided us with a great car though, (a KIA Rondo, 7 seat, compact mini-van), but we’ve already taken it in for repairs. Finding parts for it is a challenge. Just the other day I needed to change the engine belt and it took me two days to find the crazy thing. It is an inconspicuous vehicle, great on gas and runs well. Adjusting has been tougher than expected, particularly because the cost of living is higher than we anticipated.

Our Prayer Requests are:
1. Family’s health. (Laura’s infection, Benjamin’s stomach, and my hands and arms.)
2. Children’s education.
3. Finances.

Grateful always,
Jud Hatcher

Rice and Jesus at Mama Njuguna’s

Tate_profile

The Tate Family has served the Lord in Kitale, Kenya since January 2008. Their main ministry is indigenous church planting.

January 29, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Rice and Jesus at Mama Njuguna’s.

That previous statement might need a little explanation. Mama Njuguna’s is the restaurant at which I like to eat lunch in town. With that short sentence you now know what the “Mama Njuguna’s” in the above statement means. Mama’s isn’t really much of a place. You’d probably call it a dive. It’s rustic, dirty, made out of iron sheets and I sometimes share my space with mice. But the food is good and really cheap. I can usually eat my entire lunch for 50 shillings (about 50 cents). At Mama Njuguna’s I can get chai (tea), chapati (flat-bread), and cabbage and potatoes. But mostly I can get rice. Beans and rice; Ndengu (green grams) and rice; Githeri (beans and corn) and rice. Now you know where the “Rice” in the above statement comes from.  The only thing left to explain is the “Jesus” in the above statement.

I try to eat at Mama’s 3-5 times a week (again, because it is so cheap and convenient). That makes me a regular at Mama’s. [But I am also very much a novelty. Mama’s being located on a back alley in town it doesn’t get frequented by many Wazungu (Swahili term for “White People”). In fact, I am the only one that has EVER frequented Mama’s in the entire history of its existence. The son of Mama Njuguna once told me how special a customer I was because I made the establishment international. Now, Mama’s may be a dive but it is a really happening place. It is always very busy with people always coming and going. So there are lots of customers and lots of workers constantly running around. The seats are wooden, no backed benches, and the tables are cut low so you have to bend way over to eat. I am usually packed into a bench with customers pushing in at both my left and right elbows. This is where the “Jesus” in the above statement comes in. With me being a novelty and the only white guy that has ever been in this place I inevitably get asked the question by someone at my right or left these questions in succession: “Who are you and what’s your name?“; “How long have you been here?“; “What do you do here?“. It’s almost always those questions in that order. So, guess how I get to respond. “I’m from the United States and my name is Rogers” (Yes, I have to say Rogers instead of Roger. For some reason they can understand and say Rogers but Roger is unintelligible and unrepeatable to most Kenyans). “I’ve been here for nine years now.” “And I’m here as a missionary doing work for the Kingdom of Jesus.” The following conversation always revolves around Jesus.

Sometimes I get to tell them why I would give up my life in the States to preach the Kingdom of Jesus in a foreign land. Sometimes they ask me for money. Sometimes I get to share a part of the gospel with them. Sometimes they have some project they want me to support. Sometimes they are Muslim. Sometimes they are “pastors” looking for support. Sometimes I encourage them in their faith. Sometimes they encourage me. But almost always we talk about Jesus. And being a regular at Mama’s, I know all the workers and get to hear about their day. Mash and Dan, the managers, never fail to tell me that they went to church last Sunday. I also get to show the love of Jesus to all the servers: Betty, Sonny, Margaret, Maurall, Mercy, Shiro, Ingrid and others. I’ve even met Mama a time or two.

Maybe your headline would read “Burgers and Jesus at McDonald’s” or “Coffee and Jesus at Starbucks” or “Donuts and Jesus at Krispy Kreme”. Beloved, never be ashamed to talk about Jesus, no matter where you might be.

Now you understand the meaning of “Rice and Jesus at Mama Njuguna’s”. I think that has a nice ring to it. And it’s not as unsanitary as “Mice and Jesus at Mama Njuguna’s”.

Please pray for me as I prepare for another trip up into the bush, to the village of Kasei in west Pokot, a long, long way from home both physically and emotionally. I am developing a series of messages entitled “Learning to Follow Jesus from the Life of Daniel”. I will be spending five days in Kasei for a seminar there. I hope to encourage the existing believers as well as lead unbelievers into a new relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Until next month, beloved.
May God’s peace and joy be with you.

God’s Children Living Love

Missionaries John Mark and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

Missionaries John Mark and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

January 28, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am writing this letter ahead of time because very early Monday morning Judy and I will be heading to Florida to spend a couple of weeks with my parents, John and Alta Hatcher. They will both be turning 92 years old this year. Judy and I are very thankful for the parents that God gave to us. They led us to the Lord, discipled us and were excellent examples of serving the Lord faithfully. Our Heavenly Father has blessed us beyond our imagination.

Before sharing a little news from here, I wanted to mention how blessed I was to read the Hensley’s letter which told about hosting the French Bikers for Thanksgiving Dinner and overnight “camping”. Who knows how God will use this in their lives. Half of French people proclaim to be atheist. Atheists are not brought to Christ by arguing with them. You must start by letting “your light so shine … that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” God has chosen to use the example of His children living love to draw unbelievers to Himself Who “so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son”. When they are amazed by our love they will listen to the gospel. This is true in America as it is in France and around the world.

Judy is known in our neighborhood as the lady that delivers blueberry muffins to new arrivals. In the middle of last year, a new family moved into our neighborhood and Judy made her “delivery”. The husband let us know that they loved them. The lady was expecting their third child and one day as she was out walking she stopped to say “hi” as I was trimming the hedges. I stopped and invited her in to visit with Judy and me. She came in and we had an excellent “get acquainted” visit. When she gave birth, Judy took a gift to them for the baby and had a good visit with the mother. The mother let Judy know that I could come and see the baby, too. A few days later she saw Judy and me arriving home and invited us over for coffee.

During this coffee visit I asked her about her beliefs. She nicely said that she did not believe in God. I asked her if she had ever read the Bible. She said, “No, but I like the stories from the roots of religions.” Today I took her a copy of a book which is a compilation of the exact text of all of the major Bible events. It begins with Genesis and goes through the New Heavens and New Earth in the Revelation including the Gospels. She was very appreciative and we pray the she will come to faith through the Word. She offered to water indoor plants while we were gone, so I gave her the keys to the house. We have found that when you trust them, they open the doors of their houses and hearts to us.

Part of the group that meets at Bible studies in the Arriège department south of the Hatchers.

Things have been busy around here. Besides getting ready for tomorrow’s church gathering and traveling we also hosted the regular men’s prayer breakfast here this morning. As I write this on Saturday evening, Judy should be on her way home from a ladies’ gathering.

I will close by telling a bit about the picture I am including. It is part of the group that meets at Bible studies in the Arriège department south of us. As I mentioned in one of my recent letters, three different people are now hosting these meetings in their homes. Judy took this picture after our last meeting. The lady third from the right is a believer who hosts us in her home which is the background. The young man on the right is her husband who is an atheist. However, he always visits with us before and after the meetings in their home and I suspect that he listens to the Bible study from the other room.

Until next month from France,
John and Judy Hatcher

Humanly Unsurmountable Challenges in 2016; Victories Given by the Lord

Bobby, Charlene, Jessie, and Brennen Wacaser have served the Lord as church planters in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil, since 1985.

January 5, 2017

Dear Friends,

When I look back at what the Lord did during the last year, 2016, it almost overwhelms me! Although some of our challenges were humanly unsurmountable, the Lord blessed in such a way as to leave us with our mouths hanging open in wonder and amazement. We have been strengthened in our faith and trust in the Lord through the victories and accomplishments He gave.

Projeto Vida was blessed by obtaining our first passenger van and utility trailer that has replaced one of our old “tired out” motor homes. We are excited about how much more efficiently we will be able to get to the more remote areas to share the Gospel. They will be able to save time and expenses and increase the number of locations that can be reached during the new year.

We want to start the year out with a clear focus on missions and evangelism—and what better way than to hold a Missions Workshop in the first month of 2017? Our experienced pastors and missionaries will be teaching for two weeks in formal theological studies followed by two weeks of practical evangelism and outreach in public arenas. Some of the students who come from several different states of Brazil and the USA will become long-term members of Projeto Vida after this training. Some of our volunteers will be returning to work in their local churches, so there will be a type of “volunteer exchange”. This works well for both personal growth and kingdom growth.

Charlene, my daughter, Jessie, and I will be going to Brazil in March to assist the youth group from Bell Shoals Baptist Church. We always have the privilege of seeing many individuals come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ during these events and we expect that again this year. We trust that God will bless these youth and their leaders and translators.

I am grateful to you who have prayed and faithfully contributed so that we can continue to make God’s Word available to those who would not hear otherwise.

In Christ’s love,
Bobby and Charlene Wacaser

Looking Back on 2016; Prayer Request for Children

Nathan and Carrie Radford serve the Lord in Kitale, Kenya. Their main ministries include indigenous church planting, a prison ministry, and a hospital ministry for mothers with premature babies.

January 2, 2017

Dear praying friends,

It is now the beginning of the year 2017 and we wish you all the blessings of the Lord’s wisdom, guidance, and protection for this upcoming year. What a privilege it is to serve the Lord. Colossians 3:23 says “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” He does not need us for anything, but we need Him for everything. We hope this update finds each of you doing well and we thank the Lord for you.

As I (Nathan) look back on this past year, there were definitely many challenges that we faced. Many of you know about our unrest situation at our compound in Kitale and how the Lord watched over and protected us. The safest place to be is within the will of God, wherever that is. Although this unrest was unusual for Kitale, we thank the Lord that for the time being, things have gone back to normal and it seems it has subsided.

This past year was also difficult with health issues for our children. Please pray for our children and their health. A fever in Africa can mean so many different things, from malaria, to typhoid, amoeba, etc. Although our children struggled with health issues for several months, we praise the Lord that we finally got to the right doctors and received good care. Please pray in advance for this next term, that the Lord would help us all to stay healthier.

One of our most current major needs is for playmates for our children. Missions is difficult on children and they really do need friends and playmates. This is a struggle that many missionaries face. Sometimes missionary children and their needs can be easily overlooked. We do not want to do that. We continue to trust the Lord to bring playmates for our daughters in His timing and plan. The Lord has tested our faith in this area and it has become easy to get discouraged, as they just have not had playmates and friends for most of their time in Kitale. We continue to pray, believing that God knows our need and we trust in His plan. It has been difficult to wait on the Lord in this area, but we know the Lord has a plan. Psalm 33:20-21 says, “Our soul waiteth for the Lord: He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.” Would you please pray earnestly with us that God would provide families with children for our daughters? We would greatly appreciate this. Just one or two families with children their age that would commit to stay long term on the mission field would make such a big difference.

I (Nathan) am in the process of scheduling churches for furlough. If you would be interested in a meeting, you can reach me at: naterad@yahoo.com God bless you for your interest in missions.

We continue to pray over all these things mentioned in this prayer letter, knowing that God is sovereign, and He has a purpose for all that He permits in our lives. He is on the throne and in complete control. What a privilege to bring all these things before Him in prayer.

God bless you all and have a wonderful 2017.
