H.H. Overbey Scholarship Recipients

Josiah Tate
Amy Tate
Josiah Tate is our latest recipient of the H. H. Overbey Scholarship for the upcoming 2019-20 academic year. Josiah is the son of our missionaries, Roger and Julie Tate. He has served with his family in Kenya since his childhood and will be entering Cedarville University in August … as God makes the way for him to travel from there to here.
Also, we have granted Amy Tate another $1000 toward her upcoming 2020-21 academic year. We are so proud of and thankful for them both – and we urge you to pray for them both and consider contributing to the H. H. Overbey Scholarship Fund.

The H. H. Overbey Scholarship awards each recipient $1000 per academic year to continue their post-secondary education in a field that will further train and develop them for Christian service.
The H. H. Overbey Scholarship is named in the memory and honor of H. H. Overbey. Brother Overbey loved the children of our missionaries and contributed personally and generously to many of them for their Christian education and training – as well as others who are still today faithfully serving Jesus Christ. This is just one more way we can carry on his legacy of generosity.
We encourage you to pray for Josiah and also for his parents and family as they are separated from one another.
And, if you wish to contribute to the H. H. Overbey Scholarship Fund to assist Josiah and others of our missionaries’ children in future academic years, designate your contributions for “H. H. Overbey Scholarship Fund.” These funds are supplied only through your designated offerings.

Career Goals and Professional Aspirations
My name is Josiah Tate, and I’m not quite sure exactly what career I want to go into. I’ve always had carpentry, civil engineering, and youth ministry on the list of ideas. Career choosing has never been set in stone for me, and I’ve never really felt like God has revealed that to me yet. What I do know is that no matter what career I find myself in 10 years from now I have only one main goal: to praise God through it all. No matter what we choose to go into in this life, everything should point to God and His love for us. I don’t just want to be able to succeed in whatever career I end up choosing, but I also want to do it whole heartily. God tells us that whatever we do, we need to do with our whole hearts and with all our effort. It’s not just about excelling at what you do that counts, but about working hard and giving God the glory that really matters. I want to make sure that I am worshiping God through my career, showing His love, grace, and mercy in all that I do. Spreading his good news to workers and others around me should be my main priority, for that is the main goal.
Many feel that the only way to worship God in their jobs is to become a missionary or a pastor, or something to do with the church in some sort of fashion, but that is not what I have found. If I do choose to go into carpentry for example, I could create things that have biblical messages in them; things that tell a story, that can lift others up. I can worship God in engineering as well; it could be as simple as talking to workers around you about your faith and your story. That can have the same effect as being a missionary somewhere far away in a remote place. No matter where I go or what I do, there will always be people around me to talk to and get to know. Many will not be Christian, and that is the perfect opportunity to spread the love of Christ to those around me. Being a Christian leader doesn’t always mean that you are in a leadership position. You can be a good Christian leader by leading by example: living your life in a way that is pleasing to God. If you do this, it cannot go unnoticed. People will start to get curious and ask questions providing the perfect opportunity to share your faith with non-believers around you. You can also help lift up other believers as well. You can become friends with those who are struggling with their faith and together become stronger and closer to God through all the hardships this world likes to throw at us. So, no matter what career you choose to go into, you can find people to share God’s love with, and that is what I want to be known for.
Most people do want to get wealthy through their job/career. I am no different, though my desire of what to do with that money may differ from some. I do know that all the wealth I attain in my lifetime is not mine but God’s who has given it to me to use in His name, and I should treat it as such. I want all that I make to be used for God’s glory ether funding hospitals, children homes, or supporting missionaries. Money and wealth is not to be worshiped, it is just a thing that we use to measure power, and I know that it can be used for bad, but it can also be used for good. God could even call me to sell everything and become a missionary myself; but, whatever money I obtain, I want it to be used in a way that is worthy of God’s love and approval.

Thanksgiving Offering Update & Appeal
As of 11/22, our THANKSGIVING OFFERINGS total received was: $15,059.08
The total reflected in the Monthly Contribution Report printed in the next issue of our newsletter may be more … in fact, we are praying it will be exceedingly richly more! – but, we are preparing this update for publication before the close of the month…
WE NEED TO REACH FOR OUR $50,000.00 THANKSGIVING OFFERING GOAL!
(…please read below…)
Have you given your personal offering toward the 2019 THANKSGIVING OFFERING?
All the offerings given to the Thanksgiving Offering go directly toward the support of our missionaries by funding the commitments, benefits, and services we give them over the course of the next year.
Consider these truths:
- All the commitments, benefits, and services we give our missionaries are funded through offerings and contributions given to the Missionary Support Fund
- The only contribution streams that supply the Missionary Support Fund are the monthly offerings given to the Missionary Support Fund and the THANKSGIVING OFFERING
- The monthly Missionary Support Fund contributions do not sustain all the accrued annual disbursements for the commitments, benefits, and services we give our missionaries
- Therefore, we need and depend upon the THANKSGIVING OFFERINGS to make up for the monthly deficits we will incur in providing the commitments, benefits, and services we give our missionaries over the upcoming year
- This year’s THANKSGIVING OFFERING will supply next year’s monthly deficits in Missionary Support Fund contributions and disbursements
- IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE SUFFICIENT THANKSGIVING OFFERING FUNDS NOW IN ADVANCE OF NEXT YEAR’S DISBURSEMENTS, THEN WE WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO REDUCE THE COMMITMENTS, BENEFITS, AND SERVICES WE GIVE TO OUR MISSIONARIES
- we have no other reserves, subsidies, or endowments to draw from or fall back on
- we cannot borrow money to operate
- So, it is essential that we all give as generously as possible so our missionaries’ needs will be supplied
- Will you give a generous personal THANKSGIVING OFFERING right now?
- and, at the same time, may we encourage you to commit to making monthly offerings to the Missionary Support Fund!
- Your missionaries’ needs will be met – and thanksgivings to God will abound and increase and continue!
Giving Options:
You can give your Thanksgiving Offering either through your church’s offering, or by mailing your personal check to our Treasurer, or by giving online through our website www.baptistfaithmissions.org ‘Donate/Support’ tab and typing in Thanksgiving Offering in the memo field.

THANKSGIVING OFFERING FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Will you please take the time to read this appeal for a much-needed generous Thanksgiving Offering? Maybe you have not given in previous years. May we explain the importance of the Thanksgiving Offering for the continued support of your missionaries? And may we invite you to join us this year in giving to supply the benefits and services we have committed to our missionaries?! Thank you!1. “WHY DO WE HAVE A THANKSGIVING OFFERING?”
We have a Thanksgiving Offering because WE NEED IT for the coming year to supply the financial commitments we have made to our missionaries for the services and benefits we provide from a common contribution receptacle account called the “Missionary Support Fund.” The monthly contributions we receive for the Missionary Support Fund are not sufficient to supply ALL of the benefits and services we commit to provide for our missionaries. So, we NEED the Thanksgiving Offering to supplement the monthly Missionary Support Fund offerings.
2. “WHY IS THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING SO IMPORTANT?”
The Thanksgiving Offering is ESSENTIAL because it is the only source of funds for supplying many of our missionaries’ needs during the coming year. Those services and benefits NOT sufficiently funded by monthly offerings to the Missionary Support Fund are supplied by contributions received in the Thanksgiving Offering.
3. “WHAT SERVICES AND BENEFITS DOES THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING HELP PROVIDE?”
The Thanksgiving Offering enables us to provide the services and benefits we have committed to our missionaries “as the Lord provides” – in addition to monthly salary, housing and ministry allowances, and hospitalization. These benefits include:
• reimbursements for missionaries’ Furlough (Home Assignment) airfare/transportation expenses to and from the field
• reimbursements for their hospitalization personal deductibles for the year (their personal deductible is $1000 and we reimburse them $600 of that amount)
• children’s school/education expenses (if funds are available)
• expenses for mailing BFM News & Reports (missionaries’ monthly letters, reports, updates — and a brief summary report of all offerings given through BFM that month)
• expenses for maintaining Stateside office for communication and daily services – there are a lot of activities that go on Stateside to keep our missionaries functioning on their fields of service
4. “HOW ELSE IS THE MISSIONARY SUPPORT FUND SUPPLIED?”
The primary supply for the Missionary Support Fund is from monthly offerings that are given to the Missionary Support Fund. These monthly Missionary Support Fund offerings are used to supply the “Essential Missionary Support” [EMS] that we have committed to the missionaries for their standard essential monthly expenses. These include:
• their monthly salary
• their monthly standard housing allowance
• their monthly standard ministry allowance
• their monthly hospitalization premium
• expenses for printing BFM News & Reports – their monthly newsletters, reports, and updates
We just wish to reiterate – and we cannot over-emphasize – that we have no sources of funding for these committed benefits other than the monthly Missionary Support Fund and the Thanksgiving Offering. If we do not receive the necessary funding through these two contribution streams, we cannot disburse the benefits.
5. “WHY IS THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING GIVEN AT THE THANKSGIVING SEASON?”
• The BFM Thanksgiving Offering began many years ago in conjunction with the annual Thanksgiving Missionary Conference in the Detroit-area and has continued that way to this day.
• Also, the Thanksgiving season is good reminder of the thanks we owe God for His Indescribable Gift in Jesus Christ – and our Thanksgiving Offering is a good way to express that thanks.
• And, the Thanksgiving season and Offering is a good occasion for us to give missionary offerings so others, also, may hear the blessed Good News of salvation through Christ…and, in this way, share our Thanksgivings to God with others and MULTIPLY STILL MORE THANKSGIVINGS TO GOD.
• See 2 Corinthians 9.11-15
6. “HOW CAN I GIVE MY THANKSGIVING OFFERING?”
If your church receives a Thanksgiving Offering for the missionaries supported through BFM, then we encourage you to give your offering through your church. Most of the Thanksgiving Offerings that are given by churches are made up by the voluntary offerings of individual members who give to the Offering. Pastors, we encourage you to give your church the opportunity to contribute to our BFM Thanksgiving Offering.
7. “WHAT IF MY CHURCH DOES NOT RECEIVE A BFM THANKSGIVING OFFERING?”
If your church does not participate in the Thanksgiving Offering, you may send your personal gift to the Treasurer of BFM and designate it “Thanksgiving Offering.”

Treasurer
P.O. Box 471280
Lake Monroe FL 32747-1280
You can also give online at www.bfmnow.org and click on ‘Give’ and designate for ‘Thanksgiving Offering’ in the memo field.
8. “CAN I GIVE MY THANKSGIVING OFFERING ONLY AROUND THANKSGIVING … OR DURING NOVEMBER?”
No. Many churches and individual Friends of BFM give on or around “Thanksgiving Sunday.” However, offerings begin coming in before November and continue to come in to the Treasurer during the months following November, and sometimes on into the next year. You can give your Thanksgiving Offering any time. But, all offerings designated “Thanksgiving Offering” go toward the same collective Offering for that year.
9. “HOW IS THE “EVERY FRIEND A GIVING FRIEND” PERSONAL GIVING MINISTRY PERTINENT TO THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING?”
We introduced the “EVERY FRIEND A GIVING FRIEND” ministry and plan during the 2003 Thanksgiving Conference. “Every Friend a Giving Friend” encourages each of our missionaries’ friends to personally participate in regular giving to the Missionary Support Fund. This plan is nothing new or unique; it is just another way to express and articulate what the Friends of BFM have been doing since the inception of the Mission.
It is also patterned after the instructions Paul gives us in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9: that is,
1. to purpose in your heart to give an offering (9:7)
2. to give as generous an offering as God enables you (8:1-3 & 9:6)
3. to ask God – and trust Him – to supply you with the funds you will need to give the offering (9:8)
4. to plan and begin preparing even a year ahead of time (as Paul instructed the Corinthians and the other churches to do) (8:10-11 & 9:2)
5. to give your offerings to the Lord and to the Lord’s missionaries willingly and cheerfully (9:7)
6. to express your love and obedience to the Lord through your generous giving (8:8 & 9:13)
7. to give as your response to Jesus Christ’s grace and gift of Himself to you (8:9 & 9:15)
We encourage every Friend of BFM to be a Giving Friend and give a personal Thanksgiving Offering to help supply our missionaries’ needs that are met through the monthly Missionary Support Fund.
“EVERY FRIEND A GIVING FRIEND” also challenges each Friend of BFM to personally participate in missions by giving monthly offerings over and above the regular tithes and offerings you give to your church to meet the needs of your local church’s ministries. We encourage each Giving Friend to make a personal commitment to either begin giving or increase your giving each month to the Missionary Support Fund.
10. “WHY DO YOU SET GOALS FOR THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING?”
We set goals because the goal amount is keyed to the projected needs we expect to provide for the coming year of missionary ministry. And, when we increase the commitments, services, and benefits we give our missionaries so they can better fulfill their ministries, our needs for the necessary funds increase also.
And, please remember with us that we cannot approve and commit to increasing the services and benefits we provide for our missionaries unless we believe the Lord will supply those funds through your giving.
THIS YEAR’S THANKSGIVING OFFERING GOAL IS $60,000.00.
Would you please pray and ask the Lord of the Harvest what he would have you give to this year’s Thanksgiving Offering? And then ask Him also to supply you with that gift from his inexhaustible resources of Grace?
Thank You, GIVING FRIENDS!

Your New BFM Logo

We continue to make new on-going commitments to reach every person in our present generation with the message of the Gospel and to promote the interests of the missionaries whose support is administered through Baptist Faith Missions.
Sometimes that may mean adapting our most primary means of communications to reach the widest audience possible and make the deepest immediate impact possible.
So, we have re-branded our logo. Here it is. We hope you have noticed it, and if you are reading this at all, we hope we have engaged your interest.

Logo Evaluation Team
Before I tell you about how this logo came about, I want to recognize just a few of those who were most instrumental in its inception. When we started this process, we selected a Logo Evaluation Team. These team members would collaborate together to come up with a new visual ID and representation of BFM. Here they are:
- Lauren Pyles // pylesdesign.net : graphic arts designer and composer-in-chief [she is a member of Grace Baptist Church, Fairborn OH]
- David Pitman: he is pastor of Addyston Baptist Church, Addyston OH, and a Director of BFM
- Phillip DuBarry: he is Associate Pastor of Addyston Baptist Church
- Doug Brook: he is a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Bellbrook OH
- Sarah Wainright: she is a member of New Life Baptist Church, Lexington KY – and has served for the recent several years as our Media Services coordinator [website, Facebook, Twitter, newsletter, et al]
- Then lastly [and leastly], Yours Truly, Dave Parks: I served as a corresponding liaison between Lauren Pyles who was doing the designing and composing and the other members of the Logo Evaluation Team who were doing the evaluation, critiquing, and selection of the logo development as it progressed through its various stages and came together in the form we are presenting to you now.
Each and all of these team members are gifted and experienced in visual graphics and imagery in their own vocations and fields of communications, and their input was invaluable. And each one is faithfully serving in their respective local churches. I am so grateful to God for making each of them available for this ministry and for their willingness to serve as they did. We all served in the spirit of the promise God made in Exodus 31.2-4a: “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works…”

Here, then, is how we arrived at YOUR NEW BFM LOGO.
We wanted a logo/brand that would meet these criteria:
- it would identify BFM by name in the logo icon
- it would portray also BFM’s purpose and mission
- it would be bold
- it would be simple
- it would be easily interpreted
- it would be unique and distinctive, one of a kind
- it would be interesting and intriguing
- it would be instantaneously recognizable
- it would command curiosity and pique interest – make people go “hmmm…”
So,
- we went back to our nickname and short-hand moniker: ‘bfm’ That’s what we all call our missionary fellowship. For all these years, we’ve been known as ‘bfm’
- then, we saw an opportunity for a graphic icon in the opening of the ‘b’ – to help us graphically portray our mission and activity: “What kind of ‘bfm’ are we?”
- so, we inserted the four points of a compass into the ‘b’ to emphasize our commitment to obey Jesus’ worldwide Great Commission mandate…
– And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature…” [Mark 16.15]
– “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” [Matthew 28.19]
– “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” [Acts 1.8]
– we are asking our Lord Jesus to fulfill that world-wide missionary outreach through the missionaries who partner with BFM - the arrow that is pointing East is actually breaking out of the ‘b’ to signify forward direction, motion, and dynamic activity – as does also the forward-leaning slash and “Baptist Faith Missions” – we are praying to Jesus Christ that He will use us to “send out laborers into His harvest…” [Matthew 9.38]
- even the form of the arrow we have chosen is the common icon for ‘send’ – you probably click or tap on this kind of arrow numerous times a day
- this is in keeping with BFM’s purpose: “Baptist Faith Missions assists Baptist churches to send God-called missionaries to fulfill ‘essential Great Commission church-planting missions’ in the nations of the world”
- even the primary colors we have chosen have significances – besides just being visually attractive
bfmnow.org
We have also changed our URL and website address to the simpler: bfmnow.org. The previous URL still works also: baptistfaithmissions.org – but the shorter address will be easier to remember and to enter.
Re-vamped website soon to launch!
And, speaking of our website! We are beginning in earnest also to totally re-vamp and re-build our website. But, we wanted to roll out our re-branding first since our website will be built around the new logo’s visuals and graphics. Keep coming back to our website and we’ll be letting you know when we launch it also!
@bfmnow is the tag and handle for our Facebook and Twitter accounts. You will be seeing @bfmnow or BFMnow across our platforms. This is our commitment to you to keep you updated with frequency and immediacy with what we are doing and what is going on in BFM now! And, we also want to express the urgency of the Gospel message our missionaries are communicating in the fields of service where they are ministering. We are asking you – if you haven’t already – to ‘like’ our Facebook and Twitter posts, follow us on Twitter, and share/retweet freely what we are posting about our missionaries’ activities.
Whatever day it is, it is always a bfmnow day!
And, whatever time of the day it is – it is always bfmnow time!

VMP: Paul & Wanda Hatcher

PAUL & WANDA HATCHER
Paul and Wanda Hatcher served the Lord in partnership with BFM for over 40 years.
Paul grew up in Manaus, Brazil in the John and Alta Hatcher family. After marrying Wanda and pastoring here in the U.S., they returned to Manaus to serve in the Tabernacle Baptist Church. When John and Alta transitioned their church-planting ministry to the states in the south, Paul assumed the pastorate and leadership of Tabernacle Baptist Church. The church experienced phenomenal growth under his leadership and numerous churches were planted in the neighborhoods of Manaus.
In still later years, even while they were reaching Manaus, God laid it on their hearts to reach the states in NE Brazil. Through their outreach burden, vision, and efforts, numerous church-planting teams were sent out by Tabernacle Baptist Church, Manaus, Brazil, into the states and cities of the northeast. Churches that had been established in previous years were re-vitalized, and other church plants were established.
Just a few years ago, the Lord directed them to return to the States to provide care for their aging parents. They have faithfully fulfilled these services as well. They continue to serve and assist in their current home church in Clermont, FL.

Pray for them! Reach out to them through every means you can (call, write, e-mail), and let them know you still appreciate them and their service. They would love to hear from you personally, or from your Sunday School class, or your church leadership. Reach out via our Contact Page.
When you designate your offerings for ‘Veteran Missionaries Pension’ or for ‘Founder’s Month Offering’ [they are the same], they will be applied toward the continuing and on-going financial honor and support of these faithful life-long servants of Christ.
