A Trip up the Juruá River into Peru, Training Leaders

Mike and Beverly Creiglow have served the Lord in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil together since 1971. In addition to pastoring First Baptist of Cruzeiro do Sul, Mike builds his own boats and frequently travels up and down rivers to share the Gospel with those who have never heard.

March 21, 2024

Dear Brethren,

Another wonderful mission trip this month. This time up the Juruá River. For this trip I prepped my boat. It took a couple of days to get the engine running after the long stoppage because of my health issues. Pastors Ezi and Benjamim went with me for the very long run to Tipisca, Peru.

On a Sunday night I preached to a crowd of over 600 at First Baptist Church. On Monday morning at 5:00AM I was up and getting my boat down to the river. We got away after 6:00AM. Just before 5:00PM we pulled up at Foz do Breu on the Peruvian border. Our congregation at the village there is almost 300 miles upstream.

We spent next 3 days with our missionary José Costa and the congregation there. We held a baptism service on Tuesday afternoon.

On Thursday we continued on into Peru, still on the Juruá River. This short section took less than an hour. For the first time in a long time, I was able to get there without some kind of interruption. Many times I have had to stop to rescue or help somebody in distress. The last trip a group of Peruvian soldiers’ boat had sunk and I hauled them back up river to their post.

We spent the next 5 days with missionary José Maia and Silvánia. We three pastors spent the next 3 days teaching a small group of Hunikuim Indians from our congregations on the Breu River. Let me explain why we had to do this training in Peru rather than at their villages on the Breu River.

We have a large congregation on the mid-section of the river and preaching points on all the middle and lower river. However, there are 5 small villages on the upper section of the river that we had not reached yet. Our Hunikuim pastor is in poor health and has his hands full taking care of the villages where we already have a presence. A Pentecostal group got into these 5 villages and stirred up trouble with the federal government. They wanted to tell the women what kind of clothes they have to wear, putting women on one side during services and men on the other and forbidding the Indians of singing or praying in their own language. A judge heard about this absurdity and laid down the law that until further investigation no more “white” people are allowed into the tribe.

For this reason, we had the leaders come to Peru for us to teach them who and where the Baptist came from and what we believe (basic doctrines). We also needed to inform them of the origins of the Pentecostal movement and what they believe. We sat around a table for 3 days teaching and fielding their questions. We were pleased to see how Baptist these young Hunikuim leaders are.

On the weekend we held services for the folks at Tipisca. The building was packed for the 3 services. There were a few saved.

The river was at mid bank when we started our trip. In fact, it was the same level all the way, which is very rare and a huge blessing. The rains came in a deluge just after we got there. It rained for 4 days non-stop. By the time we left 8 days later the river was raging and out of its banks. This happened across the whole state and has been hard on the river folks. Even so the people came out to hear the Word. Some even came through chest high water at night. Awesome.

In fact, I wish I had space to tell you about an Ashaninka Indian named Joana who came to visit me. You will have to live with the tease until I can tell you her story someday.

Thanks for all your prayers and support. God bless you as much as He has us.

In Christ,
Mike Creiglow

Ministering to Street People in Manaus

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

January 16, 2024

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We pray and hope that all of you have had a blessed beginning to a new year. Things are going well here. Thanks for your prayers and support.

We had a great New Year’s Day dinner at church. After the dinner, I told the church that we were going to take all the food that was leftover to the street people in a plaza in Manaus. They all agreed. I went the next day with a group and we gave out several plates of food. We plan on doing this more times.

We have several new families coming to our church. The population is growing on this side of the river.  What is great is that they are getting involved in the church ministries. Our fellowship meals have been wonderful. More couples are getting involved. It makes a great time for fellowship and also to talk about ministry.

We have started the next building at the camp. With this being rainy season, things are a little slower.  Also, we plan on getting back to the church of Cacau. There we need to raise the floor. We have to take quite a few truckloads of dirt, then spread it out so we can concrete it. With the rain, that slows the work down. Since the church is right on the edge of the street, we can’t put too much dirt on the sidewalk. As the dirt is being dumped, we have to have workers put it inside the church. The Lord willing, we can get that done soon.

We have had several saved. The Lord willing, we will have baptism in the new baptistry. We used to baptize at the lake. Now the church has built a baptistry.

May God bless each of you. Thanks for your prayers and support. You are an important part of the ministry God has called us to do.

Love in Christ,

Odali and Kathy Barros

First Baptism of Two Ladies from the Deaf Ministry

Hey! Still not home, but maybe in a couple more weeks, by God’s grace and mercy. In the meantime, here is a little news. The pics are of Tatiana with the 2 ladies who were baptized yesterday and the team along with several of the deaf folks who attend our services. If you look really hard you will see my grandson, Alec, who is part of this ministry. My daughter Crissy also participates as well as her daughter Kayla.

The video clip is of Pastor Wilem in action. It is awesome, to say the least.

I have also included a photo of Dad and me. I visited him again yesterday and gave him a haircut. He recalled cutting my hair with those old handheld clippers and ripping out more hair than was actually clipped! His mind is sharp as ever.

Thanks to all and God bless.

Plenty to Celebrate

December 13, 2022

Dear Brethren,

It has been a while since I have reported to you. My bad. Over the past three months it seems that I have been ill more than well. In and out of the doctors’ offices regularly. Even had some pretty serious surgery. Not an excuse. Not a complaint. Just letting you know that my motivation is pretty low right now. There is plenty to celebrate though, so here goes.

We have a young man in our church who owns an air taxi company (2 planes. His dad started the company). Ismael flies us on some of our mission trips to more remote locations. We pay just the gas. He took me and 3 of my guys to visit our missions at Santa Rosa do Purús and Jordão. These are the two most remote and isolated cities of the 22 official municipalities (counties) of the State of Acre. We have sent already sent missionaries to all of the towns that had no Baptist church.

We sent Lucas and Diana to Santa Rosa do Purús 3 years ago, during the pandemic. They have won some souls already and are meeting on a porch along one side of the house that we bought them. We have asked Lucas to start looking for property for us to put up our first building. They are also helping the small group of Kaxinauá Indian believers that we had contacted before we actually sent our missionaries there.

Idevaldo and Queila have been at Jordão for 6 or 7 years now. They just finished their brand new building. All services had between 60 and 70 people. There were 4 professions of faith. On Sunday morning I baptized 7 people in the very shallow waters of the Tarauacá River.

Our trip covered about 1200 miles. This took just a few hours of travel time. I can reach both towns by trailering my boat then going up two different rivers. This would take a combined 68 hours just of travel time. Our work has expanded so far that the plane is a life saver.

At the same time that I was baptizing at Jordão, our home church also added 15 more members by baptism.

In mid-November I held a three day meeting for our church at Assis Brazil. It was their 60th anniversary celebration. Dad organized this church on November 15, 1962. Originally the church was located beside the lake at Humaitá do Moa. Later they moved to terra firma inland at Assis Brasil. They are in a beautiful and big new building. They have a vibrant mission work, too. Five children were saved on Sunday night. I waited until the last night of the meeting to reveal that I was the musician who played my accordion for the organization service 60 years ago. If I had told them that prior to the meeting they would have tried to convince me to play again now. Fortunately, none of us were subjected to that torture! The meeting ended well.

Thanks for all of your prayers and support. God bless you as much as He has us.

In Christ,
Mike Creiglow

Open Doors to Share the Gospel

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is JMHatcher_profile.jpg
Missionaries John and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

September 9, 2022

Dear Co-Laborers,

Thank you for your faithful support in many different ways. Compared to last month this one has been relatively quiet. We enjoyed having Lydia and Adam (our daughter and son-in-law) along with their children with us for nearly a month. These rare moments with family are a great blessing.

One day when Judy was at the grocery store near our house along with one our granddaughters, she was stopped by a young lady who had heard them speaking in English. This lady has a son in grade school, and she wants him to become proficient in English. They set up a time to come by our house while our grandchildren were still here. Judy has had continuing contact and walks with this lady. God opens doors for us to have relationships with people with whom we can share the gospel.

One of the ladies in our church is a chiropractor and a people magnet. She called me the other day because one of her patients had approached her seeking information for her daughter’s sake. The patient said that her 12-year-old daughter wanted to get baptized. The family has no religious practice. The request is interesting considering the fact that only about 2% of French people are practicing Catholics, less than one half of a percent are evangelical believers. I do not yet know what instigated this desire in the girl. The mother told Anaelle, the chiropractor from our church, that she had approached her on the subject because she thought Protestants were more open than Catholics.

Anaelle called me to discuss the best way to talk to this lady and her daughter about baptism. The lady lives on the other side of the metropolitan area of Toulouse from us. Coming to meetings here would be quite a drive, but we are hoping to see her Sunday.

We are very encouraged with the Bible studies and hope to be starting a new one in a different city this month.

May God bless you and use you as His light where you are.

In His service with you,
John and Judy

10 Baptized and Prayers Answered

August 20, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings to all our family in Christ and supporters. We pray and hope that all are doing well and blessed. We are doing great. We have had a wonderful month. Thank God that things have calmed down and we have been able to have several activities.

We had our first pizza day in the village of Ubim. We were there morning and afternoon. We enjoyed the day and so did the students. We are going to have a pizza day in the Indian village there in Ubim also. We are contacting other school in communities near us to have pizza day.  We want to thank all those who have donated to this project.

We also had baptism day at our church, Pedras Vivas. Since everyone lives far away here, when we have baptism, we make it a day of fellowship. Last month we asked prayer for a family that came to live here at our place. Well, God is working!!!! Thanks for your prayers! The father and the 3 sons accepted Christ and were baptized. Also, three from Ubim were baptized. Cleomar, the teen who lives with us, was also baptized, and Gabriel, the other teen that is always at our home. Thank God for these 10 that were baptized. Pray for them!

Pray for us as we want to reach out into the communities, that God will open the doors. Also, that God will touch the lives of the members to help more and more in these projects.

Love in Christ,
Odali and Kathy

A Baptism, A Wedding, & New Bible Study

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is JMHatcher_profile.jpg
Missionaries John and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

August 8, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The past few weeks have been very busy and wonderful. Judy and I have driven hundreds of miles, have seen God at work in many different ways and have had wonderful moments with our family.

Early in the month was our neighborhood dinner. It was at the very first of these that we met the first person who started coming to our first Bible study and who later trusted Christ as Savior. This year we met four new families with children who have moved into our neighborhood. All of these are in homes within 100 feet of ours. I was able to speak briefly with two of these couples about what we do here. They informed me that they respected the beliefs of others but were themselves atheist. This is an answer we hear often.

Michelle, the 80-year-old woman who was baptized July 24

On July 24 we drove north about 200 miles to baptize an 80-year-old lady, Michelle Pascale. We met her for the first time 15 years ago and she trusted Christ 7 years ago. She asked me to preach from John 4 about the Samaritan woman Jesus met at the well. “I am that woman,” she said. This lady has 6 children and all but one were at the baptism along with their spouses and children. This weekend was also Michele’s birthday. She invited her children to celebrate her party hoping that they would also attend her baptism and hear the Gospel. Some said that they would not attend the baptism. However, God allowed us to befriend most of them before the baptism and I invited them to attend. ALL of them attended and in later conversations with me and other believers, they expressed how they were touched by the message. Please pray for Michelle’s family.

Our daughter, Lydia, and son-in-law, Adam, and their four children (our grandchildren) arrived from Chicago on the Tuesday after the baptism. They came to attend Nathalie’s marriage. Nathalie, our second grandchild and Philip and Amanda’s second child was married to Brice Arlot on August 5. Brice is a fine Christian young man from the city of Briançon, the highest European city in the Alps. Philip and Amanda are not only family, we have been working together in the mission work here for 21 years. We cannot begin to describe the central place they and their daughters have had in the service of the Lord in Tournefeuille and surrounding cities. I was honored to be asked by Nathalie and Brice to celebrate their wedding. What a joy it has been to see her come to Christ and herself serve as a missionary to refugees in Austria.

The trip to the Alps was about 400 miles each way around, up and down mountains. It was well worth it to be able to enjoy the outdoor wedding in a beautiful setting in the Alps. We met many believers and many who need Christ who are members of Brice’s family and friends.

Judy and I are delighted to be starting a new Bible study in the city of L’Union in the home of a family to which we have ministered for many years. Several people, seekers that we have never met are planning to attend this Bible study. Thank you for your prayers for this new opportunity.

We are continuing to enjoy Adam, Lydia and their children as I write.

May God’s riches blessings be enjoyed by you. We are delighted to be in the Lord’s service with your help.

Your brother and sister,
John and Judy Hatcher

Young and Old Coming to Christ

Missionaries John and Judy Hatcher have been serving the Lord in Tournefeuille, France since 1999. They define their ministry as “disciple-making.”

June 9, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Judy and I are thankful to be serving the Lord in teamwork with you. As reported last month my Dad John A. Hatcher went to be with the Lord exactly two weeks after his 97th birthday. Judy and I were able to be with him and care for him just a couple of months before his move to the presence of the Lord.

It was a blessing to see many of our extended family that we had not seen for years and to see the work of God in the lives of many of them. It was also a blessing to see a number of our friends including several who serve with us in association with Baptist Faith Missions.

Just after completing our trip to the US for Dad’s funeral Judy and I came down with Covid. We have begun feeling better the last couple of days but have a way to go. It was very nerve racking getting tested less than 24 hours (as required by the US rules) before our trip to care for Dad and then the funeral trip. However, the Lord, who is over all things, kept us from getting Covid when it would have kept us from helping those He wanted us to help.

This weekend, Timo, a young man who has been coming to Sunday School and church meetings since grade school is following the Lord in baptism. He has invited 14 of his friends to come. It is amazing to hear his confession of faith and see his spiritual growth.

Next month a lady who is 80 years old is getting baptized. We like to see the young and old come to Christ!

I am including the letter Judy wrote at the beginning of May that will help you see the past year from her perspective.
(Click here to read her letter.)

May God bless each of you,
John
