Dear Brother and Sisters,
It is a joy to know that our Saviour will never leave us nor forsake. His presence has been evident to us this month and I hope the same is true in your life. Thanks to all of you who have been praying for us and Judy’s sister, Peggy. Some of the difficult symptoms she had when we arrived have improved. There have been a battery of doctor appointments and we have been glad to be here to get her to these. We are now awaiting answers on options for treatments in University Medical Research Centers.
I had the privilege of being with Paul and Wanda and our father, John A. Hatcher, last week in Florida. They are all moving back to Manaus, Brazil, today. Your prayers for them as they seek to minister would be greatly appreciated. During my time with them in Central Florida we had great fellowship.
The Lord has opened up doors to visit and speak in supporting churches and I am enjoying these opportunities and times of fellowship. If you are interested in us coming to share what God is doing in France or to minister to your church in any way, it would be delighted. Contact us through the email listed above.
Peggy has a couple of Bible studies that meet in her home and we have enjoyed participating in these. News from France is good and the brothers and sisters in Christ show great concern for Judy’s sister. With long distance communication today, it is possible for us to continue part of our ministry.
But, wherever we are is no surprise to God and He brings across our paths those who need to know Christ or believers who need to be encouraged and are and encouragement to us. Judy and I like to do Nordic Trekking for exercise. Since we do this on neighborhood streets and in public parks it, opens up many doors of contact. It is a bit unusual to see trekkers around this part of the country so people stop and ask us about it and one thing leads to another and Jesus shows up on the scene!

Dear praying friends,
We wish you each a great day of celebrating independence in America. This is such a special time to be with friends and family. May we be a nation that honors God and desires to please Him. I am reminded of Proverbs 14:34, which says “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” May we be a people with the desire to please God and serve Him.
It’s hard to believe we are already into the month of July. Time passes so fast. This update will share current prayer requests, as well as ministry updates.
I (Nathan) am continuing to disciple a younger Kenyan man named Emmanuel here in Kitale. I am pleased with the progress he is making and the spiritual growth that I have seen in him. He has much potential, so please pray for him, that he would take these teachings out to reach his own people. We recently considered about “Daily Devotions,” or taking time out of each day to be alone with God and hear from Him. There were so many important teachings in the lesson, such as finding a good time of day (preferably morning before the activities of the day), a good place (a place where you will not be disturbed), and taking a pen and notebook to record what God is saying to you. There are also questions to be asked of each passage, questions that dig deeper in the Scriptures and help one to understand it better. Please continue to pray for Emmanuel and his spiritual growth and development.
I am also continuing to teach at the Annex prison. I recently taught on Noah and the Ark. There were many things to consider from this lesson, but I wanted to point out that the people of Noah’s day were given a very long time to repent and agree with God. Because of their hard heart, they refused to heed God’s warnings and were punished in the end. I am reminded of 2 Peter 3:9, which says “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” May we be aware of the dangers of having a hard heart, and hear the warnings that God gives us. This is a wise way to live. Please pray for this ministry and the prisoners who come to hear and be taught the Word of God.
We are thankful that the hospital ministry is continuing along well. My wife has a servant spirit and has reached many mothers and babies with much needed clothing and supplies, as well as Gospel tracts. Please pray that many would be reached and much glory would go to God. He deserves all glory and praise.
We appreciate each of you so much. Thanks for your notes, cards of encouragement, sacrificial giving, and prayer support. You are such a blessing to us. We will keep you updated.

Sharing the Gospel on Mountain Hikes and in Public Parks

Dear Friends,
Our winter weather has arrived here south of the equator. We aren’t having snowstorms, but the upper 20s without indoor heat or insulation feels frigid for almost anyone. Fortunately, I thrive in cooler weather and this is my favorite time of year. One of our ministry efforts during this time of year is to take teams hiking in the nearby mountain range. The cooler weather makes the physical exertion more invigorating and that makes it easier for us to invite unsaved friends to go with us. The hikes give us opportunities to get to know new friends better and show them the love of Christ through our actions and words. We have had several people come to our church services for the first time after having participated with us on a mountain hike. Just recently there were 36 of us who climbed a local peak and one of our members had 2 workmates and their wives go also. We always have prayer before we begin the hike and, during it, we intentionally point out God’s greatness in the creation of the natural beauty around us. When we stop to eat our packed lunches, we give thanks for His provision. I have spent time teaching our people how to use opportunities like these to find open doors for sharing the gospel with their friends and family members who accompany us. We also teach the entire group to consider how they behave and treat our guests so as to reinforce what the one sharing the gospel has to say. These hikes are also a great way to get some physical exercise while being distracted by the beautiful scenery around us.
Our outreach team went to three interior towns this month sharing the gospel. We were amazed at how many teens and children are being abused, both sexually and physically. Sadly, many times it is the very family members that should be loving and protecting them that are doing the abuse. It is enough to break your heart hearing 8 to 18 year-olds tell about suicide attempts and feelings of being unloved by their parents. Most of them live in fatherless homes and often the stepfathers and step-uncles are the sexual abusers and aunts often abuse them physically when they are called upon to “babysit” their nieces and nephews. On the one hand, these youth are distrusting of nearly everyone, but on the other they are very hungry for the good news that God loves them. Our teams are almost overwhelmed with sadness for their situations, but often are thrilled with joy when these youth come to Christ as their Lord and Savior! Our team was privileged to share the gospel in public parks and schools to over 2,000 students, teachers and adults this month. Only eternity will reveal how many of these truly surrendered their lives to Christ, but dozens openly confessed that they are now trusting in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. We are grateful for the opportunity to take the good news to them and we want be faithful in doing it while we still can.
Next Sunday we will begin worship and Bible study in English for the first time in our church services. We don’t know what kind of attendance to expect, but we are hoping that it will be a ministry that will only increase our outreach in the community. Many Brazilians want and some need English for their jobs and education, so there are quite a few who, we believe, will come to improve their language skills. It is our hope that God will use this strategy to communicate His word to them even if their aim is only secular. Please pray that God will save many through us.

Hesitating to Collect Offerings

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
So, I started the Upper Room Baptist Chapel almost nine months ago. A number of people have attended and gone but I have been blessed with a few families and individuals who have faithfully attended and been an integral part of the Chapel. Since I started the Chapel almost nine months ago, I have not collected an offering or “passed the hat” in any way. I have been very hesitant to do so for various valid reasons, these reasons being especially relevant for here in Kenya. However, over the last few months at various intervals almost all of the faithful attendees to the Chapel have asked me why I haven’t taken up any offerings. They have respectfully and lovingly questioned some of my reasoning with some good, logical reasoning of their own. One thing that I have heard from most of them is that they want the Chapel to continue long term and they know I cannot possibly be around forever. They want to help support the ministry and ultimately see it become self-reliant. This is obviously a good, reasonable and Biblical goal (and quite lofty) which I whole-heartedly approve. Seeing as most of the faithful attendees have approached me on this matter at one time or another, I feel it necessary to discuss the reasons why I have hesitated such a long time to inaugurate the collection of offerings.
15 Valid Reasons Why I Have Hesitated to Collect Offerings at the URBC: 1. I don’t want anyone thinking I (or the Chapel) just want their money; 2. In Kenya, too many pastors (and churches) are in it just for the money. To them it is a job, a lucrative job, and people are easily fleeced; 3. Too many Kenyan pastors and churches completely misuse donated money, stealing money from the offerings for their own personal use; 4. Misuse of money causes Kenyan people to not trust the pastor; 5. I want the focus to be on the gospel ONLY and not on money (in some churches it’s just money, money, money all the time); 6. I don’t want anyone to think they cannot come to the Chapel to hear the gospel because they cannot contribute; 7. I don’t want anyone feeling pressured to give money they don’t have or to take food off of someone’s table (a reality here in Kenya); 8. I don’t want any unbeliever to think we are here just to collect their money. I don’t want them to even come close to thinking that; 9. Money can be a cause of division and fighting among God’s people. I have seen it cause countless troubles in Kitale churches as when there is money in the coffers people viciously fight over it; 10. People with the money tend to run a church with their money and have a greater influence within a church; 11. Pastors focus more on people with money than people without money (James 2:1-4); 12. Ministry becomes one of numbers and money; 13. Pastors become afraid of preaching truth out of fear of losing tithing members. Pastors become puppets of tithing members; 14. People will come to our Chapel only for the expectation of getting some of the money in the coffers; 15. I don’t want people to give money just so they will in turn receive material blessings, a typical and universal teaching here.
Do these sound like valid reasons to hesitate to you all? But my attendees have valid arguments too and I know that giving to the Lord’s work is Biblical and vital to the health of the ministry. We will be discussing these matters at the Chapel. Please pray with us as we want to follow the instruction of the Bible and the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Celebrating the Church’s 90th Birthday in New Building with New Professions of Faith!
Mike and Beverly Creiglow have served the Lord in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil together since 1971. In addition to pastoring First Baptist of Cruzeiro do Sul, Mike builds his own boats and frequently travels up and down rivers to share the Gospel with those who have never heard.

Dear Brethren,
For a long time, we have known that we needed to expand our facilities if we wanted to continue to absorb growth. To that end we built a new steel building over the top of our old building. That was the easy part. Getting up the gumption to tear down the old building and rebuild was the hard part. It had to be done though, so on January 13th we held our last service in the old building. From there on out we held services on the third floor of the annex.
On January 18th we started the demolition. The goal was to move back in by the church’s birthday on May the 12th. Those four months were intense, to say the least. I only made three mission trips during that period. For the whole time I worked 10 to 18-hour days. Naturally, I caught a lot of grief from my wife (not so much because of the long hours), but because from time to time I was 30 feet above the ground in the rafters. The Lord protected us all and there were no serious accidents or injuries.
On May the 10th we held a three-day meeting to celebrate the church’s 90th birthday. Brother Joe Brandon organized the church with 13 members on May 12, 1929. Today the church has well over 1600 members including those who are in our 9 chapels here in town. Pastor David Hatcher was our guest speaker. On Saturday we had our annual pastors and missionaries meeting with over 100 workers present.
Our former seating capacity was 830. The goal was to double that with the new building. We put every available bench, pew and chair in there. We still had room for another 200 seats. We filled the building every night. The guys who take care of stats for me counted over 1400 on Sunday night. The best thing though was that during the meeting there were 24 professions of faith.
A few months ago, I designed the new pews for our new building. We managed to get 8 of those finished for the church to see in time for the anniversary services. We will be building over 100 of these to be able to fill those extra spaces and replace some of the older pews. I am telling this mostly for the following reason: I told the church that once we got moved back in, I was going to take off a month and rest. So just before I left Cruzeiro do Sul, I stretched out on one of the new pews to begin my rest!
Bev and I have been in the States for almost a month. We will be returning to Brazil on June 20. I still have most of the finish work on the building awaiting me besides 3 other building projects, not to mention all the other regular jobs that I must keep up with. So, pray and rejoice with us about all the great things that are happening in Cruzeiro do Sul.

New Opportunities in New Cities for the Seminary
The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

Friends and family,
It has been a very busy time at our house these past few weeks. We are completing our travel plans for July. Our trip for July is to Manaus to see if there is a need for our Seminary. As we are a traveling Seminary, we are in constant pursuit of another group of Pastors that would benefit from the learning more about the Bible. So, with that in mind, we have been in contact with various Pastors in Manaus. As a matter of fact, they contacted us. We will be meeting with them in July to discuss what we have to offer and to meet with them to begin to get to know them and to get to know their needs.
They have asked us to participate in a Pastors Conference in July with them where Pastor Derek Coleman will be one of the keynote speakers. They have conveyed to us the desire of 30 to 50 people to participate in the Seminary and think that after Pastor Derek speaks in July that that number will increase. God is AWESOME!!!!!!
During this trip we will be going to another state named Rondonia. The people have promised us two things for certain there and that is that it will be very humid there. Also, that they are very excited to meet with us and talk about having our Seminary there in the town of Cubia. Just as I always say, “What an AWESOME God we serve.”
Last month we went to visit the church where Pastor Sheridan and Anita are serving. We talked with them about the Seminary and how God is using it to educate the Pastors and the church workers there in Brasil. It was a good time getting reacquainted with old friends.
Also last month I was presenting our work about the Seminary one Sunday night with the mission committee also speaking about a mission trip to Brazil. I believe that every church should have people from their church go on a foreign mission trip because I believe that such a trip broadens their vision and commitment for missions.
As we entered the sanctuary, we were greeted by Odali and Kathy Barros who were also visiting Heritage. After church we went to have coffee and catch up with each other. You see, though we both serve in Brasil, it is rare to see them in Brasil. As we talked, we took the opportunity to invite Odali to be the translator for the planned upcoming Seminary classes in Manaus. Please make that a prayer request for us.
After July we will be back in Lexington, Kentucky for a couple of months and have some time to visit your church and tell you all about what God is doing through us and because of you and your support. If you have asked us and we have not gotten back to you, please reach out to us again. Both Barbara and I feel like we have not responded to someone and that is not our wish to forget anyone.
We will be back in Brasil in September and October for the next Seminary classes in the city of São Paulo and the city of Campins, along with classes in Garça, São Paulo. Please for these five classes and their professors and students.
As in all cases, I want to commend our professors for giving of their time and talent, and not forgetting their churches who allow them to participate in the education of our Brasilian Pastors. As you know, our professors are PhD’s and Dr’s and this is helping us in the accreditation process for the Seminary. We have been doing a lot of paperwork to get the accreditation in Brazil but to do this we had to give the Seminary an American name. We put much thought into this new name and finally settled on one. Our new name is BLUEGRASS BAPTIST SEMINARY. Continue to pray for us and the Seminary as we work to advance God’s kingdom in Brazil and wherever God leads.
The month of June I have become one year younger and I give God the glory. My health seems to be going good except for the occasional pain. Pray with us as we pray that this is not a problem. But above all I just want to say, “WHAT AN AWESOME GOD WE SERVE.”

Dear Brother and Sisters,
Last month I wrote, “There are always ups and downs. Sometimes what seems to be a down becomes an up.” At the time I certainly did not think that I would be writing the present letter from Evansville, IN. Many of you know Judy’s only sister and that she has been dealing with cancer the last few years. At the end of May, Judy and I decided that the Lord wanted us to come to Evansville to help Peggy because of the illness related circumstances that she was facing. The encouragement of the believers in our congregation in Tournefeuille helped us much in the decision process. They have really stepped up to the plate. We have now been here for two weeks and thank God for the opportunity that we have had to be of assistance to Peggy.
A blessing that came along with our trip to the US was getting to see my sister and dear brother-in-law, Kathy and Odali Barros. Though I had seen Kathy not long ago, it had been nearly 10 years since I had seen Odali. They are in the US for a short time and will be returning to Amazonas next week. What a blessing to spend a couple of days with these members of our family this week.
We are not sure exactly what the next few weeks hold for us. I would be glad to set a tentative date to come to your church to tell what God is doing in France and minister to the folks in your congregation.
