Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The year is passing so fast that it is hard to believe July is gone. We pray and hope that all are well and blessed. We are doing well and blessed by God through each of your prayers and support. We have had the privilege of having some friends from Kentucky visiting us. It’s been wonderful. One of the ladies, Jennifer, used to work with us at Alpha and Omega in Garça. We have visited different places and shown where we have ministries.

Also, me and my son Joshua, mostly known as “Zinho”, are on our way to a tribe in Cruzeiro do Sul. We will be walking in the forest for 43 kilometers (26.7 miles). The chief of the tribe is a Baptist pastor. His son is from Mike Creiglow’s church.

Now that is raining less, we will be able to work more on the camp buildings and also work on the remodeling of the church in the village of Cacau Pereira. We hope and pray we can get a lot done and finished so we can use both places.

We had lots of problems with our cars but looks like the problems are getting solved. Praise the Lord. Living out where we live is difficult without a car. Also, we take several people to church. Pray that the cars will continue working so we can use them in the ministry.

Thanks to each one of you that are part of the ministry through prayers and support.
God bless you!

Love in Christ,
Odali & Kathy

Reaching Other Communities, Need Van

December 15, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Hope and pray that all are doing well. We have been praying for those where the tornados hit. May the Lord be with each one through this difficult moment.

We are doing well. God has blessed the services that we have started in the homes. This has opened doors in homes of people that don’t go to church. In the village of Serra Baixa we are giving soup on Wednesday nights. The number has grown. We were doing this in the open. Now we have been able to use a small auditorium that belongs to the community. This way we can have a service.

What has been really great, and was our plan, was to get more people from the church involved. One of the families that we first started at, we went to pick up to bring to church. The first time there were 3. The last time there were 12.

We plan to go into other communities. As you drive along the highway you see many exits of dirt roads. As you drive, you come into many small communities. Many of the people that live in these places don’t have cars, so it’s hard for them to go to a church. So, the best way to reach them is going and having services in their homes. We are praying for God to provide us a van. It is hard to bring so many in a pickup truck and it is not safe.

Kathy and I, our son Jonas and his wife, and the teen who lives with us are going to spend Christmas in Garça where we had the children’s home. Several who were from the home will spend Christmas with us.

God bless each of you. Pray that all of you have a great holiday season. Thanks for your prayers, love and support!

Love in Christ,
Odali and Kathy

Special Program at Pedras Vivas

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

September 20, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are all well and hope that each of you are doing great. This month was a little different here at home. Kathy went to the US to help with her dad. Paul had messed up his arm pushing his dad in the rain coming from church. So, they asked her to come to help with him. She is back now and had a good trip and visit with her dad and Paul and Wanda.

We are doing a special program at the mother church, Pedras Vivas. We invited a team of 20 young adults to help with Sunday School and teach music to those interested. We want to make an emphasis on fellowship with other churches and get more people involved in the ministries in the church and show the importance of each one serving in the church.

The church in the village of Cacau is really doing great. We are excited that soon we will be back in the church building with more space. We have put the ceiling in and an air conditioner. The members that had scattered are returning. Praise the Lord!

We are still limited with all the different activities and being careful with everyone’s health. We have had the virus in 2 families from our church. They stayed out of church for over 2 weeks. Thank God they are all well.

Today the last things that we had left in Garça arrived here in Manaus at our home. Thank God that the trip with the things went well. The driver was raised at the Alpha and Omega Home. What a blessing.

Pray that God well lead us in the new project of getting people involved and reaching out to more places. Thanks for your prayers and support. God bless each of you!

In Christ,
Odali and Kathy

A Joyous Reunion!

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

December 28, 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are coming to the end of one more year that God has given us to serve Him. With God’s leading in our lives, in the year of 2020 we can reach out to more people and tell them about God’s love and salvation.
The year has been a great year and God has done wonderful things. One of these wonderful things was the end of the court case against us because of the children’s home. So many times in the last nine years there were hard moments in the hearings. We had to trust the Lord that He would take care of us. Last June the case was closed and we were found not GUILTY! Praise the Lord. Several of those who lived at the home were so happy when the case was closed that they wanted to celebrate. So, they chose to have a day to celebrate at Christmas.

So, we bought our tickets and went to Garça to have the thanksgiving for what God had done. Several of those who were raised there came and helped put everything together. What a wonderful time we had and to see the adults doing well. Others that could not come to the Christmas dinner came by to see us. What a blessing and encouragement it was to see them grown and married and with their families. One of the kids, whose name is Marcia, invited us to go eat supper at her home. She and her husband work hard and have their home and their car—doing so great. They have two children and she and her family go to church. The kids these couples have had call Kathy and I “Grandpa” and “Grandma”. We had fun with them at the home and also taking them fishing. That is one of the things their parents remember: Kathy and I taking them fishing! The parents wanted to go fishing like they did when they lived with us. So we went with them also. What wonderful memories!

We also went to the church I pastored there. It was great to see the people there. Thanks to the Lord for allowing us to go there and just have a wonderful time of fellowship and healing.

Our prayer for 2020 is that God give us wisdom and strength to reach out to more people in the many communities around us. That souls may be saved!

A special thanks to all of you who pray and give faithfully to our ministry. God bless each one of you.

Love in Christ’s Name,
Odali and Kathy

Seminary Classes in São Paulo

The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

October 27, 2019

Dear friends and family,

This month has been fast and furious. Barbara left on the 1st of the month and I and Pastor Russell Zik from Durbin Memorial Baptist Church left on the 10th. We went to Caragua to visit the grand kids and Pastor Zik preached at Caragua Baptist Church.
We left Caragua Monday morning, driving to Garça, São Paulo. We got there around 6:00 and the first class started at 7:30. We were expecting 5 to 8 students and God sent 20. There are so many times that we sorely underestimate the Lord. The class that was taught was Pastoral Ministries. Out of the 20 students there were 8 pastors. The rest were church workers. This class was to be the last class taught in Garça but God had other plans for this area. We now have 21 students interested in continuing the seminary there in Garça. Again, we underestimated the Lord. During this week, one of the students called us to ask if we could come to his work to present the gospel. We found out that he works at a prison and the warden wanted us to preach to the prisoners. We did not hesitate nor think twice. Pastor Russell brought a salvation message and there were 12 inmates that made commitments. These inmates were getting ready to be released so God’s Word will be going home with these 12 people. There are many ways to spread the Word and we do not think of not even half of them. We serve an AWESOME God!

Pastor Zik and Barbara came back to the States and I met Pastor Greg Waltermire and Pastor Derek Coleman at the airport. And with this, we begin another week. Pastor Coleman of Gardenside Baptist Church is headed to Campins where he will be teaching Survey of the New Testament. And Pastor Waltermire of Heritage Baptist Church will stay in São Paulo to teach History of Christianity.

There were 29 students in the São Paulo class. One of the students got to class late on Monday and he told us that he had left home at 4:00 in the morning and only got to São Paulo after 7:30 that night. How many of us would travel that far to study God’s Word? He is staying with local pastors for the week. Another of the students is the Doctor that was in the class last year. The students hosted a birthday party for her 83rd birthday. In this class there are 7 different denominations represented. Each of them will be taught Baptist doctrine this week and if they stay for next week’s classes, they will also hear the same Baptist doctrine. Again, God works in wondrous ways His miracles to perform.
In Campinas we were looking for 20 students and there were only 11 students that showed up. But like the preacher who preached his whole sermon when only one person came to church, when he was asked why, he explained it this way: if you went to feed your cows and only one came you would not go home without feeding that one. So, the students received the whole class even though only less than half of the students showed up.
In these two weeks we will have had 5 classes in three cities to 60 students. More than 25 of these of these are pastors, serving 22 churches. It is hard to say how many people will be reached through these men.

I told you last month of my doctor’s appointment. Well I have had that appointment and the report is as follows: the test for the PSA is non-detectable, which means the cancer is not showing up on their test. What an AWESOME God we serve. I will have another checkup in 6 months and I am expecting to hear the same news.

Here are some pix.

Prepared in Advance for What God Would Have Her Do

The Hensleys have spent nearly 20 years serving in Brazil. They have established a church in Caraguatatuba and mission points throughout the city. They have also recently started a seminary to train pastors.

This month we missionary wives have been asked to write the letters for the mission sheets, so here I go with the many memories.

This year we will be completing 22 years in Brasil. It seems as though it was just yesterday that AJ started his campaign to convince me to go with him to be missionaries to Brasil. As many of you all have heard, in the beginning I was hard to convince, but God is faithful, and He worked on my heart. So, when AJ told me that he was going before the Church on Sunday night to tell the Church he was surrendering to be a missionary, God put these words in my mouth, “I am ready”.

I have not regretted—not once—that response. Our first place of service was in Garça, Brasil, with Odali and Kathy Barros. I helped Kathy with the children and AJ worked with Odali. There I used all the various skills that I had learned in Owsley County, Kentucky, as the daughter of Pastor H. W. Baker, who was a mission pastor. We stayed in Garça for 6 years being parents to up to 21 boys. There are many stories that could be told of those years. Needless to say, we have many children who call us Mom and Dad there in Brasil. We share that honor with their biological parents and with Odali and Kathy. Of all the boys that went through our care, some have their own businesses, some are lawyers, others are in the business world, and another is finishing his studies to become a veterinarian.

Me and some of the girls with the pillowcase dresses that the American ladies made.

Have you ever washed clothes on a wash board? I did as a teenager and again in Garça. Have you ever had to heat your water on a stove or in a big tub outside? I did as a teenager and again in Garça. Have you ever had to walk to Church? I did as a child and again in Garça. As I said before, God prepared me early for what He would be having me do later. In the words of AJ, “God is AWESOME!”

This is me with children at Jacareí.

After Garça, we moved to Jacarei, Sao Paulo, where we had plans to open another orphanage. As we worked through the paperwork, we started a mission church and there I continued to work with children. We had several families in the neighborhood who did not have transportation to get to a Church. They also had children, so I worked with them on Saturday and Sunday in Bible schools and Sunday schools. But after two years we realized that we were not going to be able to get the approval from the mayor for the orphanage, so AJ began to pray for a sign to stay or move on.

Maybe you have heard this story, but God answered these prayers with a sequester. You see, we were living on a farm way out in the country and were a target for theft. This gave AJ his answer, so we moved to Caraguatatuba. There we worked with Pastors in two churches and then we opened a new work there.

This is Matheus the young man who influenced our location for Caragua Baptist Church.

My service for the Lord continued to be with children. With the help of one of the boys from the orphanage in Garça who came to help us in Caraguatuba, we had Saturday Bible school in the homes of various members.

As we began to look for a place to open a new work, one of the children from these Saturday Bible schools, who started as a babe in arms in these Bible schools, stopped us on the streets. He stopped us on the street and said, “Mrs. Barb, when are you coming back to our neighborhood to teach us?”  So, guess what that sealed our decision as to where to start our new church.

Caragua Baptist Church came to life in this young man’s neighborhood. There again my job was with children. God sent many, many children to our location and we love them all.

So my time in Brasil has been an adventure where I have sat up all night rocking a sick boy, planned a wedding for one of the boys in our care, taken in people who are down on their luck, women who have been abandoned by their husbands and grandmothers whose homes are being flooded, and counseled women in their day-to-day problems…to name a few of the things that God has let me do.

I just want to say, “Thank You, God,” for working in my heart to make me willing to go on this adventure with AJ Hensley. We serve an AWESOME God. Thank you for all these memories and we look forward to many more.

In His Service,
Barbara Hensley

Missionary Update: Odali & Kathy Barros in Brazil [August 2015]

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

July 26, 2015

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

We rejoice in the Lord that all is well here and we pray that all is well with each of you. Kathy got back from her trip to the US to see her parents and our children. She had a great time. She really enjoyed the BFM conference in Lexington.

We are really excited with what God is doing here.  I have been pastoring the church for a little over a month. God is really working and the people are responding. Before, when services were over the members of the church would leave immediately. It has been wonderful to see them change and just enjoy hanging around and having fellowship. We praise God for this. There were some children that were coming to church with some members of the church. After a while the mother started coming. Then this month the father came. The father got saved after the second time he came. Kathy and I went to visit them. I asked him why he started coming to church. He said that we started to notice a difference in his children, so he wanted to see what made the difference. Last Sunday night I did not have an appeal for salvation at the end of service, but as soon as service was over the children’s mother came to me and said she wanted to be saved. Praise God! At the next midweek service I asked if anyone wanted to be saved and the lady made a public decision. Also another man got saved this month. This last month we have averaged 66 in church. Last Sunday we had 10 people baptized. What a blessing!

The youth group is doing great! We have had to drive two cars to take them to church. Last Sunday night we had to drive 3 cars. We are praying that God will give us a van.

Last letter we mentioned about a group that was going to come and build a church building in one of the communities where we were blessed with a lot given for a mission. Two weeks before the group arrived we had a group of men putting in the foundation. The group that came arrived here on the 9th of July. They stayed here at our place. They started putting up the building on Monday and had walls up, windows in and lights and fans ready to use in four days. They worked hard and did a great job. On Sunday we had an inauguration service. The building was full and 3 people were saved. Kathy and a group of young people are having a children’s program Saturday afternoon. The first day they had 63 kids. Then on Saturday night and Wednesday night we have services. The response has been great. Pray that God will continue to open doors in this city, MUTIRÃO. We want to thank Tabernacle Baptist Church for the lot where the building was built. Also thanks to Judson Hatcher who gave our name to the group that wanted to build a church.

We have talked to the people in Garça these days. They are really excited with their new pastor. They are doing some remodeling in the area where the church meets. It is really great to see how happy they are.

Please continue to pray about the court hearings about the closing of Alpha and Omega because of the accusations that the kids were mistreated.  Pray that God will give the Lawyers wisdom as they gather information they need. We thank those that have already been praying for us.

In Christ,
Odali and Kathy

Missionary Update: Odali & Kathy Barros in Brazil [April 2015]

Odali and Kathy Barros served the Lord in Sao Paulo, Brazil together from 1987-2013. In late 2013, they transitioned to Manaus in Northern Brazil to start sharing the Gospel and planting churches in villages along the river.

March 27, 2015

Greetings dear Brothers and Sisters,

Hope all is well with each of you and your loved ones.  We are all doing well, praise the Lord! Kathy and our son Tito are in the US for Kathy to see her parents.

Things here are coming along really well.  Next month I will become the pastor of the church here that we have been attending and working with. My brother is going to pastor the church I was a pastor of in GARÇA, São Paulo. Also, we have a great blessing from a group that builds churches in Brasil.  This group wanted to help a missionary son. Judson Hatcher told them he knew some that had land for a church and needed a building. We met with the people involved and, the Lord willing, in July we should have a building. All we will need to do is put down the floor and feed them. What a blessing! It is in the community called Multirao.

The work in Ubim is doing great!  A few weeks ago it was pouring down rain so I called the people that we use the home to have services in and asked if it was raining. The lady said it was really raining so I told her we were not going.  The next week when we went, we were surprised to find out that 7 kids had come any way. We told the kids we were sorry that we had not come and that we were never miss even if it was pouring down rain. It has been so fantastic to see the kids change. The adults are very slow. There are so many kinds of churches. So pray with us that we can be able to teach these people about salvation by grace. The churches they go to are works.

We had a Sister church from MANAUS to come out and do some evangelism in the church and several communities near us. It was great and several people got saved.  Now the churches doing follow up visitation.  The group also did some social work, like cutting hair, doctor, dental hygiene and mesotherapy.

There is one thing here that makes it difficult for some people to come to church. Many people do not have transportation.  Kathy and I drive 2 cars to church every service to help take people to church.  We are praying for God to helps us buy a van to be able to do more.

We want to thank all of you for your constant prayers and support. May God bless each of you.

Odali and Kathy
