Frustrated with Delays

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Folks, life and ministry is just NOT going according to MY plans. I just can’t get a handle on things and it is frustrating me to no end. I have ministry alterations I would like to make and I can’t seem to move forward on them. My plans keep on being delayed and I can’t implement them or even move onward. I thought I would have much to write about this month and I can really only think of one word to write: Stymied. Or maybe, obstructed; blockaded; hindered;  impeded. OK, that’s more like five words. But the idea is the same…I am frustrated over the delays. I want to move forward, I want to follow through with the plans I believe are from God, I want to write to you about some of the changes I wish to make and I want to see what God will do. Unfortunately, I think God is the main person I am wrestling with. It’s not that I don’t think the new direction isn’t from God. I do believe He is the one directing me. It’s just that He is not moving forward at the pace I want Him to or according to my timeframe.

You see, the main thing I want to do absolutely, positively cannot be done in my own strength or in my own power. My own ability will get me practically nowhere. Oh, I suppose that by utilizing my own severely limited abilities I might be able to build some kind of temporary human structure. But without the empowering Spirit of God demonstrating His power in this future ministry, it is simply a house of cards waiting to be blown over by the slightest wind or tremor. If there is one thing I’ve learned (I hope), it’s that without the moving of God in a ministry all my human efforts are futile. And I’m tired of starting futile endeavors, building futile ministries and trusting in the futile work of my own hands. And until God allows me to move forward I cannot outline what I think He wants me to do. That makes for a short, uninteresting, frustrating newsletter. But that’s where I’m at.

Afterward: Beloved, I have just read over my newsletter and, while I haven’t changed anything, I realize it sounds angry. I am NOT angry. Just impatient is all. I will be seeking advice from trusted counselors and friends.  Grace and peace to you all.

Until next month, beloved.
May God’s peace and joy be with you.

Missionary Update: The Tates in Kenya [April 2014]

The Tate Family has served the Lord in Kitale, Kenya since January 2008. Their main ministry is indigenous church planting.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am writing this on March 28th, 2014.  By the time you read this letter I will be gone from the United States because the family and I leave for Kenya in just five hours.  Six years ago when I was just five hours away from leaving the States and heading to Kenya on my own for the first time I was scared to death.  My stomach was in knots, my mind was whirling, my chest was tight and my head hurt.  I am thankful that today, even though I know we are just hours removed from our flight back, that my mind is at peace, I am fairly calm, and I don’t fear the future.  I can sum my feelings up right now with the following sentence:  I am ready to go but not ready to leave.  I hope that is understandable to you who are reading.  We are all ready to head back to Kenya and get back to ministry there, but we are not ready to once again leave family, friends and church in the States.

As we head back to Kenya, I thought I would show you my checklist/to-do list.

DONE

  • Visit all the churches, report on our work in Kenya, remind everybody who we are, make sure everyone is praying for us
  • Spend time with our home church, friends and family as we will probably not see them again for over three years
  • Pack up the house where we are currently living and clean, clean, clean
  • Discontinue all services (internet, phone, utilities, etc)
  • Return all borrowed items
  • Pack the luggage we are taking to Kenya.  Weigh it.  Re-pack it.  Weigh it.  Re-pack it.  Weigh it.  Re-pack it…
  • Have “going away” dinner at church.  Say goodbye to church members.

NOT DONE

  • Wait 4½ more hours
  • Call Emily
  • Weigh luggage one last time
  • Get to the airport on time
  • Say goodbye to friends and family; cry
  • Travel 10,000 miles and arrive in Nairobi
  • Renew life and ministry in Kenya
  • Terribly miss all our loved ones back home

So, as you can see, much has been done and much has yet to be finished.  Thank you all for your continued love, prayers and support.  The Lord be with you.

Until next month, beloved.
May God’s peace and joy be with you.

Roger & Julie Tate (and Emily, Amy, & Josiah)

Missionary Update: The Radfords in Kenya [December 2012]

Nathan and Carrie Radford serve the Lord in Kitale, Kenya. Their main ministries include indigenous church planting, a prison ministry, and a hospital ministry for mothers with premature babies.

Dear praying friends,

Another month has come and passed, and we are now very near the end of 2012. During this holiday season, may we never forget the true reason and meaning for Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. One of my favorite verses concerning the Christmas season is Isaiah 7:14, which says “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” I pray that we would be thankful during this season and remember the birth of our Savior.

I wanted to send a recent photo of our family (above), as we have not sent once in several months. It is hard to believe that McKenna will be five years old soon and starting school next year. Camille is continuing to grow and develop, and Lord willing, will be two next February. A challenging verse to me as a father is Ephesians 6:4, which says “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Please pray for our family, for us as parents, and also for our children as they grow and develop.

The church plant in Shangalamwe is continuing along, but a prayer request that I have now for this church is for the dependency issues. The dependency has seemed to have increased in the past few weeks, and I ask for prayers specifically for my friend Roger Tate and I, that we would patiently teach the people the truth from the Word of God and that the Lord would work in hearts. Please also pray for the elder of the church, that the church chose, as he eventually will be stepping into more responsibility for leading the church. We have covered the main teachings to the church, have been modeling for the church over the past few months, and are continuing to progress along well. Again, if prayers could be made for the church to really lean upon the Lord and not anyone or anything else, that would be much appreciated. Psalm 118:8 states “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” We will keep you updated of this ministry.

The Annex prison is continuing along well. We are continuing along well in the course “Firm Foundations – From Creation to Christ.” The men have been coming faithfully and seem to have a real desire to learn from the Word of God and follow and obey it. Please pray for each of the men, that they would be doers of the Word. One of my favorite verses is James 1:22, which says “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” What a challenging verse for all of us. We will be sure to keep you updated of the Annex prison ministry.

As for how to pray for us specifically, the holiday season here is always difficult. It is hard to be separated by thousands of miles from friends, family, culture, etc. We are doing the best we can, but there are definitely difficult times. I am so thankful for the Lord and for the strength He provides. His strength is perfect when our strength is gone. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season. Also, a great 2013.

May the Lord bless each of you.

Missionary Update: The Tates in Kenya [November 2012]

The Tate Family has served the Lord in Kitale, Kenya since January 2008. Their main ministry is indigenous church planting.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Life is going on here in Kenya. Josiah turned 11 years old this month. We had a small party for him with some friends (mostly grown ups because there are very few children his age here). The radio controlled car he received from his grandparents in the mail keeps roaming around the house. I also have a birthday coming up in ten days. I will turn 43. And, just a few days before my birthday, I will attempt to run my first full marathon. Why am I attempting this? It’s hard to explain. But, maybe the Kenyan runners inspired me. Too bad they will be so far out in front of me when we run the race.

Ministry goes on as well. At Shangalamwe we are very close to beginning a newer phase in that new church’s ministry. Up to now, Nathan and I have done all of the teaching and leading of the new church. We are about to enter a phase where we will begin to gradually hand these responsibilities over to the believers and members of that church. This is Paul’s method in the New Testament and we want to emulate his methods as much as possible. Sometimes he would stay in a city for a year or two teaching and other times he would be run off after only a few months or weeks. But in every place that he went he tried to leave a strong church led by strong leaders. We want to begin teaching the leaders of the Baptist Church of Shangalamwe to take over teaching the Word of God, leading the worship, and leading the church in general and in spiritual matters. We have tried to model much of this for them over the last few months and hope and pray that they will follow this leading. Nathan and I cannot stay here at this church forever and in this culture it would be far too easy for them to become dependent upon us to do everything for them. This transition might not be easy for either them or for us. Change is always hard. However, this young church has the Word of God and the Spirit of God to lead them, help them, guide them and empower them to continue and persevere and to do the work of the kingdom in the village of Shangalamwe. May God bless all their efforts in doing his work and will.

Also, the young man, Titus, who we are discipling on a weekly basis is doing just a fantastic job. He has started five Bible study / worship groups all on his own without any direct intervention from us and all of these groups are thriving. This is what we encouraged and trained him to do and he is running with the training and doing a great work for the Kingdom of God. His groups continue to grow. In fact, one of his groups is no longer able to meet in the original house they were meeting in because they have outgrown it. The 32 people coming simply could not fit in the small house where they were meeting. They had to meet outside and sit on the ground. I cannot begin to tell you how excited that makes me. His other groups are doing almost as well. We have trained and modeled for Titus how to start groups and teach them the Word of God. Now we have begun to train him on how to turn these groups into churches: What the Bible says about churches, what a church is, how a church is organized and started, what needs to be done, steps to be taken, etc. Our prayer and goal is that some day these groups will have the necessary “Biblical ingredients” and take the necessary Biblical steps to become churches of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Until next month, beloved.
May God’s peace and joy be with you.

Missionary Update: The Radfords in Kenya [August 2012]

Nathan and Carrie Radford serve the Lord in Kitale, Kenya. Their main ministries include indigenous church planting, a prison ministry, and a hospital ministry for mothers with premature babies.

August 3, 2012

Dear praying friends,

It is now the month of August, and we are past halfway through the year 2012. What a blessing it is, the time that the Lord gives us to serve Him. May we be faithful to serve Him, whenever or wherever that is. One of my favorite Scripture verses is Isaiah 6:8, where the Word of God says “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” I hope and pray this is our desire before the Lord.

In ministry news, the church in Shangalamwe is continuing along well. Over the past few weeks, I have really seen how the people here need Biblical teaching from the Word of God. My good friend Roger Tate and I have been working with the people for months now, and it has been exciting to watch them grow spiritually, take in the Word of God, and follow it. Our challenge to them is not only to know the Word, but follow it, practice it, obey it, and reach others. Several have been visiting, so we are thankful for this. We ask you to pray for us, that we would have His help in all areas and progress of this ministry. Please pray for us as we teach, that the teaching would be understandable and that they would not only hear the Word, but be doers of the Word. Please also pray that the people would trust the Lord, wholly and completely. Isaiah 26:4 states “Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.” We will keep you updated on the progress of this ministry, and we appreciate your prayers.

The hospital ministry is going well. My wife enjoys this and has been doing this work with the mothers and babies for a few years now. It is a blessing for her to be able to be involved with this. Many of the mothers and children there have been reached with what God has provided, and what a joy it is to serve them. Proverbs 19:17 says “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” What a challenge from Scripture this is. Thanks to each one who has sent supplies or given sacrificially to this ministry. Some of the babies there are abandoned, and have many struggles, so we would appreciate your prayers for them also. May God bless you for your heart for missions.

The Annex prison is continuing well, for which I thank the Lord. The Lord has provided good students of the Word, those who seem to be genuinely interested in knowing and obeying the Bible and what it teaches. We are now in the New Testament of the teachings, and will soon be looking at the ministry Jesus had while on earth, as well as other teachings. Just recently, I taught some from Luke 1:37, which states “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” What is impossible with man is possible with God. We serve an all-powerful God!

Please keep our family in your prayers, for safety, health, faithfulness to the Lord and the work here in Kitale, and that we would be the examples before our children that we need to be. Camille is now nearly walking, which does not seem possible. What a blessing she is to our family. McKenna is the typical little girl, lots of energy and into many things. They keep us on our toes, to say the least. Pray for us as we seek to lead them in the ways of the Lord. God bless you all so much, and we will keep you updated.
